Need some help with picking a few parts and suggestions on assembling a 496. The car is going to be 90% street driven and will be my brothers "cruiser". Here is the project:
66 Impala SS T350 trans w/shift kit & BM Holeshot Torque converter 3:55 12 bolt 496 internal rotating assembly (thanks to Wolfplace) ~10:1 compression 049 heads with 2.19/1.88 valves with full port job Thinking 60204 VooDoo hydraulic lifter cam Looking for comments/suggestions on the following 750 Holley DP carb needing rebuild- I am wondering what jets should I start with? Anyone have a suggestion regarding modifications such as the main body kit that smoothes out the radius entry and eliminates the choke tower? All suggestions regarding carb are definitely appreciated. The distributor is an HEI unit. What would be the suggested initial timing and total timing? Any recommendations on modifying the distributor? Intake is to be purchased. I am thinking of going with a Weiand Stealth unless I can find a good deal on a Air-Gap. I believe the carb linkage on the Impala is rod style and I am wondering if I will run into any problems with binding since this is a factory small block car (is there a cable style set-up that can be used?). What fuel pump would work best with this set-up. Not looking for latest wiz bang pump but something that is practical and will work efficiently ie stock HP pump such as what would have come on an LS6. I know the fuel line size will need to be upgraded but for the interim, the stock will have to do. I may come up with more questions but for the mean time this is it. THANKS in advance for any comments or suggestions!! Durand Also, anyone know of a place to get stock short water pump style pulleys and brackets for a reasonable price? The only "accessory" the car has is power steering. |

A friend built a similiar motor (049heads,dual plane, 231/239@.050 voodoo hyd roller) with good results, 575hp@5300. IMO the RPM and stealth intakes are pretty much the same from a performance standpoint. A good mech fuel pump should work fine like a cartier or holley etc. I have upgraded my line size to 1/2inch with a good mech pump and it has feed a 560hp motor with no issues. You might look into using buying a carb body like the proform, I am not certain, but I think it would work with the parts from a 750dp.

For a street cruiser, that combo you're putting together will be nice. A friend has that same combo (496/tight 10"converter/3.55 gears) with the 60204 cam, 049/781 heads, and an 850 Holley in a 3840lb. Chevelle.
It sounds just like an LS-6 at idle, is decent on gas, and runs 11's with M/T drag radials on it. It's sweet to cruise around in, never overheats, and has tons of torque. The only thing I'd recommend is to use a better valvespring on that cam, something like the Isky 8005A apring. Even though the recommended Lunati spring checks out OK, the Isky spring extends the rpm range by about 500-600 rpms.. Either the Stealth or the Air Gap will work fine. Be sure you have at least 3/8" fuel line up to the pump, and throw on a 172 Carter with a regulator. He has 18° initial at an 800rpm idle, and 38° total, all in by 3200rpms. I definitely would use a Proform main body. The 496 is going to like airflow. He'll be happy as all get-out with that combo! Randy

What about the carb jetting? Randy- What seat and open pressures with the Isky springs? The same as recommended by Lunati? Durand |

Carb - 750 is too small, think larger like 850..., start out with factory jetting.
Intake - Stick with the Stealth Hei - Timing start with 36* all in by 3000, initial at 14-18*, total with Vacuum at 50* using adjustable vacuum advance Carb Linkage - you may have to modify and bend it somewhat. Fuel Pump - Carter 172, no regulator needed

Thanks for the input. I agree an 850 would be much better but I am "contributing" from my pile of parts that I was saving up for another project. Unless I can find a good deal or swap, he is stuck for the time being with the 750. I would like to go up a notch on the cam but he would not be happy with the street manners. Durand |

I have the Voodoo 60234, and at 285/293 adv., 255/263 @ .050, .680 lift 110/104 LSA ICL it is a tad choppy, nothing radical at all. LOTS of low end grunt, with plenty to boot upstairs. Nice exhaust note, pulls hard, excellent bottom end, good on fuel, and you can drive it anywhere anytime all day. Like I said, my friend's 489 with the same combo, 3.55 gears, and tight 10" converter went 11.90's no problem first time at the track with no tuning. The next cam up, the 60205 would be REAL nice in a 496, but if you have the 60204, run it. Just keep the compression about 10.25 or less, and it'll be happy. Randy
