I've got a 600 Holley 1850 model set aside for my 283 (292) project presently in the works.
I would guesstimate it will be somewhere around 280-300 hp.

If you have a spreadbore intake , I would run a newer quadrajet with electric choke.

Mild application, street use, I'd chose the Edelbrock 600 in a heartbeat... I also think for a "new" carb, the Edelbrock's usually are a little less expensive. For a street car, I also think the "base" Edelbrock looks better than the base version of the Holley.

I have run both on numerous cars, and alot depends on the intended usage and the entire setup on the car.

IMO, basic performance "street" car, and desiring a "new" carb, I'd go with the Edelbrock. I have swapped from Holleys to Edelbrocks on no fewer than 4 cars, and everyone ran the same or better than the holleys, with less tuning required... bolt it on and go... And these were High 12's to low 15s second cars. Not only was "performance" basically the same, but mileage improved along never needing to retune. I am not saying Holleys are bad or they need frequent tuning, just a little more work than the Edelbrock, and insignificant performance gain (in a typical "street" car). Go to a car show, and see how many "nice" cars are running Edelbrocks. The "performance" cars (and wanna-be's") will often run Holleys, but the cruisers (Street rods, old guys, etc) seem to be more in line with the Edelbrocks.

Now something with good traction, and/or more into frequent racing, and if you want to fine tune, then I'd probably go Holley.

Naturally, getting into higher HP cars, better traction, mileage not a concern, tuning tinkering not a concern, trying to get that last HP out of the car, then I'd go Holley. Cars that CAN utilize the extra fuel might benefit from a double pumper, but I have seen several DP cars actually run quicker when switched to VS carbs (proper application and tuning)

Edelbrocks are generally easier to tune (basic tune, rod and jet changes, step-up springs, secondary air door on Thunder AVS Series), but the Holleys allow more fine tuning and different variables (pump shot, squirter size and pump cams, air bleeds, secondary springs, Power valves)...

Older Holleys had a reputation for blowing power valves. I know I had to change many. Not too bad, but still a mess and 10+ minutes of wasted time (a little longer if you aren't used to it). The Edelbrocks allow very rapid changing of metering rods and step-up springs (about 1 minute to change, including removing the air cleaner), so pretty easy to adjust those variables...

I still see ALOT of people that just assume the Holley is better for performance (an urban myth), when really, so much depends on the ENTIRE car... or people get confused and can't figure out tuning on the Edelbrock, toss it and go back to the Holley... Its not that Holley is better, just that its been around for years, been very common and alot of people have been tuning them, so a lot of info... It doesn't hurt that real race cars use Holleys either (win on Sunday, sell on Monday at its best). But its often like watching that Nascar "Chevy" win and then going and buying your own Monte Carlo and thinking its the best...

I would suggest a Street Demon carb over the Edelbrock or the Holley. The cost is a little higher, but man what a difference in quality and it will also make more horsepower.
