Default 'Synchromesh' transmissions

Can anyone describe to me what a 'synchromesh' transmission is? Is a Tremec TKO one of these? I've heard a few people talk about them, including my grandpa, but am a bit confused...thanks.

The synchromesh transmission is a type of constant-mesh transmission. It synchronizes the speeds of mating parts before they engage to allow the selection of gears without their clashing.

If you can down-shift into first gear BEFORE stopping the car, it's a synchromesh. Older trannys, especially 3 speeds, weren't. You had to come to a complete stop to put them in first gear. Some of us older young people remember them well.

That's also what allows you to easily shift a Muncie without a clutch, because the gears are so well synchronized (and designed).

Synchromesh = synchronious meshed (or continuously synchronized) gearing
In other words, inside the transmission, the adjacent gear's speed is synchroized with the current gear so the 2 can be engaged or meshed (without grinding).
