Just picked up a 87 monte SS with a 468. I was out playing today and the motor lost oil pressure and I shut it right off. Put 4 qts of oil in it to overfill it and oil pressure is back. So the pick came off.
So since I need to pull the motor. I fiqure I should change the cam. Car runs ok but I feel it needs a little more power. What would you change?
468 with about 200 miles on it.
781 heads
10.1 compression
forged pistons
Comp cam FT 280H 280/280 520/520
1.7 roller rockers
850 holley
2.5 exhaust
headers look to be 2 inch a little big
2500 convertor in a 700r4
373 moser 12 bolt
Have the heads pocket ported and big valves installed if not already. If you are good with staying flat tappet on the cam then upgrade to a lunati 60204.
Or if you really want to wake it up, stick a Comp xr288hr in it or a Lunati 20110712 (previously the 60212) or even a comparable Howards cam & lifter package @ a little over $500. Makes it not worth using an FT cam.
Leave the cam alone and put in the bigger valves you will probably pick up around 30 hp. I picked up from 13.45 to a 12.95 with that change with 049's and a 272 .515 lift camshaft several years ago. If you have a good flat tappet I would just run it. If you change it I would not chance another flat tappet. I would go with a roller more than likely. It all depends on what you want. I mean you can grab more power and go with a bigger cam, valves and maybe go with some 1 7/8" headers. That 280 cam probably sounds really good in there right now.
