At my job today a customer came in and recognized me and asked me if I drove a green chevelle he had seen there a few times, I said yes. He said he is friends with the mechanic who had done some of the work on it, and asked me if I was interested in putting an engine in it. I asked him what he would quote for a 400sb, he said 1295 on up, depending on what I want. Its a long block, I just need to supply carb, intake, and distributer. Does this seem like a pretty good deal, or too good to be true?

Justin,
Sounds pretty cheap to me ?? I would be hard pressed to build even a stock 400 for that price if I had to supply the core motor. If you had a stock motor to start with, I would still be well over that price for a nicely built motor. I would be very suspicious and ask exactly what you are going to get for your money. ------------------ Bill Koustenis Advanced Automotive Machine Waldorf Md 1971 Heavy Chevy - original owner Team Chevelle #100 |
Billk's response----------ditto for me.
If this is a fresh built, never been started 400, consider this: 1. Machine shop price to vat, bore, install cam bearings, freeze plugs, turn crank, valve job, etc. 2. Parts-pistons, rings, all bearings, cam, lifters, timing set, oil pump, maybe valves/springs, gaskets. 3. Assembly labor. Add up all of the above, and for $1295, that doesn't leave much, if any, for profit. But now if this is a used engine (even if it has been rebuilt) how many miles are on it and what kind of shape is it in? As always, BUYER BEWARE! ------------------ Tom Parsons |

i bought my 400 with all the machine work, rods pistons (forged), crank, heads, rings bearings and a cam for 750 bucks, so its possible for another 150 i could have had an intake and a carb the guy just wanted to get rid of it…
