Probably not exactly what you are looking for, but I just shot the underside of my hood and did my steering column with the Kirker Hot Rod Black single stage and it came out nice. Paint flowed and covered well. I am using for all my semi gloss coats on the firewall, wheel wells, Dash, and upper door and pillars.
Just got back from the Street Rod Nationals and saw what looked like a good paint deal.
There was a Napa booth there and a Rep from Sherwin Williams was pushing a piant kit that included a gallon of urethane primer, sealer, base and clear along with required reducers and hardeners in the Finish One brand for under $600.00. You had to pick from 25 colors from the Barret Jackson collector color series. Any one have any experience with this paint? Is it decent stuff?
You are going to get a lot of greif here for asking about a cheaper paint line. I see no problem with using this stuff and a friend of mine used the whole Eastwood system and his car turned out great. They feel you get what you pay for. But from some of the cars I have seen using the cheaper systems they work fine. I am going to use all SPI stuff on my car.
Cheap paint has it's place. Yes, I like using higher end paint but depending on the job a lower line is fine. However, jobbers have lower lines available so there is no need to buy on-line. Unless your geography and jobbers have limitations, or they do not offer a paint you want. Eastwood and Summit do not make their own paint. They prey on peoples' naivite.
While I don't know anything about the BJ stuff I have used the finish one
high build and clear and I like both of them very well for less expensive
paint. I did use dimension black base but if I were to paint color I would
use the Ultra base for color match. Here is a picture of one of my customers
cars I shot back in Jan.
I'm kinda lost here. I went to summit and looked at the paint and can't seem to find bc/cc kits. The description says 1 gallon. Does that mean you have to buy the clear seperately?
From the link you would buy 1 gal of base, 2 quarts of reducer and a small
hardener. A gal or reducer should be very close to the cost of the two quarts.
Same with clears and base as far as their own hardeners. Some reducers can
be used on other coatings you would need to look at the base, clear and
primer tech sheets. Also pay a lot of attention to the temp. range as that
plays a very big role in your results.
Chucks68SS the Nova looks great. I have been trying to find out who the paint manufacturer actually is and Summit was also at the Nats but wouldn't give up the name. I told him that I have shot TecBase before along with some PPG and he said that I would like the paint. Curious have you used anything from SPI, I can't find anyone locally that has and no one locally is a vendor.
I got the paint info from one of the R&D guys in Ohio. Also a little give away
is in the product number from Summit which starts with SW
If you shot PPG you will have no trouble with this at all.
Yes I did try one cup of SPI epoxy primer from a friend that bought some. It
was fine but to me not all the hoopla I've read about. You do get a little more
product but I will stick with SW and my local jobber. Btw you can get the
Finish 1/Dimension a little cheaper than Summit if you have an local SW
automotive store in you area.
Also thanks for the compliment on the car...it looks a lot better than the
picture.
Well this car is one I'm doing for a long time friend and money was an issue.
And here is a car with a few hours in it too see pictures. Anyway I'm very
pleased with this paint for the money. Btw I have the paint code if you need
it for the Dimension base with no tints as Scott talks about. Just let me know
if you need them. I wouldn't shoot the kirker for base but that's up to you.
Next car up is a 29000 mile GTO with just about all the options. Now that
one will get the full Ultra line. So unless its special or very special to you
you will be happy with the lower line.
I'll interject here. Make sure these blacks are indeed as black as you want. All blacks are not created equal. Some, especially the lower lines, are on the brown and/or gray side. They look world's apart from the truest of blacks.
Raven1 I'm not looking for black paint but rather was seeing if anyone had experience with Kirker Black Diamond - that is what they call there new base coat.
