Sport Mirrors from 72 Skylark work on 71 Chevelle?

Hey all, I know the A-bodies were very similar but I'm wondering if a pair of sport mirrors from a 72 Skylark would fit correctly on a 71 Chevelle? I don't have a Skylark as reference to see if the top of the door skin is essentially the same as my Chevelle (angle, etc.)

Any thoughts? Any comments are appreciated!

They'll physically bolt on but they will be in the wrong spot. The '71-'72 Chevelle sport mirrors were unique in that they mounted to the top part of the door and utilized a base with a specific shape so they would not be tilted into the window. The Buick/Olds/Pontiac mirrors mounted lower on the door and were angled for that position. Using a BOP mirror in the Chevelle location will not appear correct and may even contact the window. If you want to use the BOP mirrors, you'll have to mount them lower on the door which, although not correct, some people don't mind doing.

A friend of mine used a right hand mirror off a 70s Camaro, I think. He had to have part of the bottom portion ground off to get it to fit right. It got to be a little tricky with the location of the mounting holes, but it looks factory. He was able to use the same gaskets for both sides.

I think there have been other posts about this before.

You can either shave the mirror mounting base (not the preferred choice since the overall footprint of the mirror base will get larger) OR you can get a different gasket with a thinner angle to it. As mentioned above, be careful when rolling up your window. Check that gap for proper clearance. 70-81 Camaro or Firebird mirrors share the same heads, but the bases differ in angle slightly.

Here's mine - Not sure what they are off of but I changed the mounting angle around 15 degrees - The base actually gets smaller as you trim it so I made new gaskets out of thin plastic. I also made angled spacers on the RH mirror for inside the door so the bolts would have something flat to hit when tightened up. LH mirror mounts like the orig Chevelle mirror and the RH has studs. (I changed to bolts) I wouldn't go much over 15 degrees as the bolt angle gets really steep.
