Hi guys! This is how I came to own my 70 Chevelle.
I'm sure we all get the Penny saver, a little classified listing that you get in the mail for free right? Well I always grab it and look at the cars first, and I opened it up to the page and this is all that the add said, still have it with me... 1970 Chevy Chevelle, 454, 4 speed, needs work, 1500 obo. I thought it was a type, a 1970 Chevy Chevelle, with a 454 and 4 speed for only $1,500? I called, and guess what? It was not a type, he was seriously asking $1,500. I looked at the car in person that day, paint was in very good condition, interior was very clean and dash had no cracks, it had ugly ass wheels and cheap o tires all around, missing a head light, and looked like the mirrors were replaced some time. It had SS 454 badges all over the car, it was equipped with a working cowl induction hood. He told me that he believes his car is a real 454 SS car. His brother died a few years prior to this, and left him the car, it sat for about 6 years in the garage, the guy could care less about it. About 45 minutes of seeing it and talking to the owner, he took a check and we went to the bank to cash it, and I was givin the Chevelle.
We had a flat bed come and pick it up, by this time it was approximently noon forty five. So first thing I did was wash it, the car needed a good clean wash. The cars color came though nice, the car had a nice shine to it, we also detailed the interior. We went out to Auto-Zone and Krageen, and I picked up a Distributor, spark plugs, ignition coil, plug wires, brake master cylinder, motor oil, etc etc and a few other things. We installed them, and we flushed the block / radiator, changed all fluids, and we went to start the car. On the 3rd try, it turned over and the came came to life, all the guages worked, the tach was revving up to 4,500 RPM, the exhaust sounded sweet (stock chambered??) It was time to test drive this un-regesterd, un-restored beauty.
We drove slow and easy at first, slowly giving it gas, We limited the speed to about 45 MPH for the first 10 miles, then I opened it up a little bit. I was shocked to find out this car has no posi-traction. I found out while I was at a stop light, I dumped the clutch and tried a burn out, one tire lit up, for over a block, it was a very long one tire fire, I was proud. The turning sucks, I need to get the suspension re-built, It is going into the shop Thursday for suspension work so no fears. I drove the car around for about another 30 miles, the car was running hot (new thermistat needed?). Other then that no problems.
