Hi guys and Happy New Year.

This is my 1st post as I'm about to do some major upgrade to my stock LS5 engine in my '71 Corvette and I'm seeking some guidance to choose the correct parts.

I'm forced to get the Edelbrock Torker II intake because of the limited hood clearance, so I would start from there to choose the right cam, my engine/drivetrain specs are as follows :

1- 454 + .20 over
2- 9:1 CR
3- TH400
4- 2000 RPM stall torque converter (TCI)
5- 3.08 rear
6- Hooker Super Comp. 1 7/8 in. primaries long tube tuned headers.

My main use for the car is cruising around with few auto crosses events and maybe a visit or two a year to the drag strip.

I was looking at the XR282HR hydraulic roller camshaft, what do you think of that camshaft with the Torker II intake?

Hamad,

Welcome to Team Chevelle!

My 70 El Camino runs remarkably well with 8.8:1 CR and the Crane 226*/.533"/108 LSA cam. Hydraulic flat tappet cam. Performance numbers below by the signature. Good manners yet great torque. Do not go really high on the duration at .050" with the modest compression and 3.08 gears....maybe 235* @ .050" tops

I have not run a Torker intake in 20+ years. My 68 427 Vette has the L-88 hood so I can run the tall Performer RPM intake. See pic below in the gallery.

BBC Vette in Saudi Arabia....priceless! I don't suppose there is a fuel shortage there. What octane can you get?

BTW, visited Ad Dammam back in the early 1990s.

Thanks George .. I know that my bottle nick here is the 9:1 CR, thats why I'm looking at the XR282HR which has only 230* , I just dont know how it would mate with the Torker II intake as its a open plenum type with low rise.

I'm not in Saudia Arabia George, I'm in Qatar, and yeah driving a old big block Corvette here is really interesting! .. but I know a bunch of guys here that drive similar cars as well and we do a weekly meeting here, too!

Will a Performer fit? In back to back testing they had the same numbers once tuned. As far as cam I wouldn't go any bigger, with 3.08 and mild stall lots of TQ will be fun.

Hamad,

My bad, I know Doha is in Qatar.Lack of attention on my part. I must have started my New Years a mite early! A few of my TC pals were crewing for one of the boats at the races out your way a few weeks back. Did you attend?

Pictures of the Vette (or a link) would be appreciated Hamad.

Jimmy, I do not think that a Performer will fit. Pretty much the Torker or a 67-69 factory lowrise Q-Jet intake 427/390 engines. There is the LS-6 rect port intake too.

Yeah George, I knew about the race but unfortunately I havent got the time to go and see it, next time I will.

Here are few pictures of the 'vette, you'll see the "before" picture just before taking the engine apart.

before engine rebuild :

After the final assembly and painting :

Engine back to the car :

You'll also noticed that I added few things to the car while engine was out, like a hydroboost brakes and aluminum radiator with dual Spal fans (very much needed in our summer!). I also did a frame on restoration for the whole car (transmission, rear end, brakes, suspension, steering, interior .. etc).

Back to the main subject :

The Edelbrock Performer wont clear the stock BB hood, the only aftermarket intake that would clear the hood is the Edelbrock Torker II.

I would rather have the stock, low rise cast iron intake then the Torker II
With that in mind, the XR282HR will be fine using the stocker.
There are some little tricks you can do to "help" the stock intake..like blocking off the exhaust crossover and installing the GM lifter valley shield.
Hamad, your vette is looking awesome...nice job!!!

Hamad,
Chris, mr 4 speed, does have a good point. for 95% of your driving, the factory spread bore intake is a better idea. But I would forget all about the iron units. Be looking at eBay for the factory 427/390 horse Aluminum intakes, 1968-1969.

I liked your pics! Yes, cooling is very important in your little corner of the world.

Here is a shot of my car...
I have others. If you have an 2008 Edelbrock catalog, that is my car shown in the carb section.
