This is unreal! They were fixing potholes on US route 30 this morning. No big deal, right? Well here in western Pa. we fill the hole with tar and spread gravel over it! What a mess, so much for taking my car for a nice cruise. This is a major highway.

You, my friend, are in need of some highway maintanence personell with a brain. That crap will be out of the pothole before sundown. While they waste your tax dollars. Tommorrow they can do it all over again. "If it ain't hot, its snot". No replacement for hot asphalt. But it sure is good for job security.

I was honestly waiting to see a pacifica cubed by a salvage yard in a giant hole and being used as filler while they fill the rest with pot ash.

Bummer.

Here in MN, they have trucks that spray the crap right down onto the road through a hose pumped in from a container in the back of the truck. Nice except it also can srpay the cars passing if they get to close. I suppose it's incentive to keep your distance.

Around here, they fix potholes in concrete roads with cold-patch. There are stretches of roads with multiple generations of "fixes" in the same spot.... they literally patch the patches, rather than fix it right.

The latest "thought" that our local gov'ts had is, it would be better to tear up some of the paved roads and make them gravel again, so they can save money on repairs.

I remember my Mom as a kid used to like it when there was some fresh tar or asphalt on the road. She'd always speed up to throw some up in the wheelwells, because she thought it was good for the car. Technically, yes, but we use undercoating today. :D

As far as crappy roads, yeah, some of your road crews must've learned from ours. A few years ago, my friend calls me up laughing, says they're finally paving a road they've been digging up for over 2 years. And right behind the paving crew is the Board of Water Supply, cutting the fresh asphalt to get back down there to where they were working. We've got the patched, patched, patched, patches too.

they probably used a potholer machine ...... it uses peagravel and 90/90 ashpalt emulsion it shoots the mixture out of a wand when you squeeze the trigger on the application wand. its a good way to patch holes .... usually stayes in very well. might look like crap at first but packs in and stays for years usually ..

you first coat the hole with 80/90 then hold that trigger and depress the rock switch and it mixes it at the gun tip release 80/90 trigger top with dry rock ...... tamp it in .. and its there for a long time. alot longer than cold patching works very well for shallow patches where your hot or cold patch mix will kick out of it ..
I work for indot and use this machine at times ...

I love it when they "resurface" the road by spraying tar on it and spreading crushed stone on it, I can't even begin to think how many windshields were replace for the forst couple weeks untill it was packed down. They do 20 mile stretches like this. :(
