I read your cooling 101 article , im having at highway speeds a cooling issue , the car does have 411 gears in it and it runs at 3300rpm at 65 mph , so that being said ive pulled my 3row radiator out and having it rodded out and tanks clean it does look restricted in the tubes and also im changing the thermostat question on i have a holly sniper efi on the car the temp sensor is in the intake it opens up at 160 can i run a 170 thermostat instead of a 160 ? I also have a 772 fan and bought a hayden hd fan clutch that u suggested of coarse on my big block ss396 L78 car the fan shroud does not cover the entire radiator area so i bought a shroud that fits a 71-72 chevelle bbc one i read that they fit my application i sure hope so, also the car is a non ac car as well , any help on this mater would be appreciated . Thanks

    Hi Scott,
I have a 69 Chevelle that has a nice DeWitt 28" direct fit alum. radiator. Question is should I get the shroud for the 71-75 big block with HD cooling for it? Some say the stock 69 big block shroud doesn't cover the complete core? And some say that the 71-75 shroud for the 26" core covers better than the one for the 28" core? Iam confused? Oh by the way, I followed your recommendations on the AZ thermostat and clutch fan too. Thank You for your help.

Hey Scott. I've greatly enjoyed your posts and have followed along in the tuning and performance of my 68 SS 396 el camino. The tips on the cooling system worked perfectly. The quadrajet tuning and ignition timing threads are dead on correct. My stroked, roller cammed, ported 396 idles nicely at 800, no nozzle drips.

But im tired of exhaust leaks on the headers and I'm ready to put the original manifolds back on. This car will probably never see the track nor 6000 rpm too often so I don't really care about any power loss. The engine builder did use new ARP head bolts though and your posts suggest that I may have fittment problems. My headers did, and I did grind the flanges. Will my stock manifolds require grinding too or will just a simple gasket work in your experience. If so, which one would you suggest?

Thanks for sharing all your great info. My 68 runs great with a lot of thanks to your advice.

Scott, it has been a long time since we chatted, but here's where I am at. The car is completed. The paint came out near flawless and the interior the same. I had Bob Bush from Yorktown do my startup and with that Voodoo 60203 it sounds outstanding. Tomorrow night I am doing the 1st oil change on my startup 3 hour old oils. I am using the high ZZDP Summit oil. Is there a zinc additive I should be using with this? I am very eager to get it out on the road.

Scott i do have one issue you might have some insight on, after running the car about 20 minutes it will increase the idle from 950 to about 1200-1300 rpm. I notice the temp goes to 200* when the idle is up,, then it goes back down after driving it 10 minutes back to 180*. what would cause it to do that?

Scott, its Joe down in Phoenix with the 57 Chevy, I wanted to tell you that my motor has been running 170-180 all winter (70 *) thats our cool winter :) Once i hooked up the vacuum advance and set the initial timing at 20* it has never gone above 203-205*. Setting the timing correctly is very important!

Hello Scott, I have also owned my SS since 6-30-78. What are the advantages of drilling the stat & are there any disadvantages? What diameter hole is drilled? I was told by a former Yenko mechanic that an engine must reach the proper temp. in order for it to operate correctly. This relates to the charts posted by Dale & Derrik. This is also why I had the high flow impeller removed from the H2O pump & the correct one installed. I was told that the high flow impeller circulates coolant to quickly & reduces the required operating temp. I purchased the 15356 stat but need to decide weather or not to install it. Any more advice would be greatly appreciated. Rocco

Scott: I've enjoyed reading your posts about cooling - you really know what you are doing! Most of the info seems to be about BBC and 68+ Chevelles. But I have a 1967 Chevelle with a 6cyl and I'm building a 400 SBC to drop into it. Will your usual recommendation of the 772 fan + factory type shroud + 2747 Hayden fan clutch work for my SBC set up? I'm worried about clearance between the fan and radiator. Also what about the diameter of the fan...will it fit inside the factory SBC shroud? or do I need the BBC shroud for the 772 fan? Also, which thermostat temp rating should I try first and what do you mean by drilling holes in thermostat - how many, what size, etc? Sorry for all the questions. Thank you!

Hello Scott, I have a question about engines and oil I'd like to discuss with you if possible. This isn't about flat tappet, which I've read so much about. I really have learned more about oil than I ever thought I would need to in your posts and it is all very interesting and appreciated that you have done so much homework on this subject for the rest of us to learn from.
I am looking forward to talking with you.

hello Scott, I was reading an old thread on "oil on spark plug threads" and noticed you said your speedpro plasma-moly rings took 1-1500 miles to seat. Just wondering if this is common with these rings, my motor is smoking with 400 miles on it, after high vaccum decelaration or revving it up a few times and bliping the throttle. thanks!!

Is it ok of the seat with the assembly doesn’t have a slot for the fuel to come out the base and only comes out the top? I ordered that 147" Inlet High Flow seat assembly and it didn’t have it.
i think ill be ok but i just never seen a high flow one like this.

    Scott,
    Thank you, thank you.
I will go with the HD from NAPA.
So I will stop by Chevrolet dealer and order the fan- part #772 and then to NAPA and get the HD clutch. Am I thinking straight?
You don't know how nice it is to get straightforward answers.
I really appreciate your time and effort.

I sure hope you used a proper oil additive rich in zddp along with that 30wt rotella for cam/lfiter breakin, ifnot you may wind up wit a bad cam down the road.

Send me you email in a pm not tis way ,then i can send you a list of oils/oil additives that can properly protect an aftermarket perf flat tappet cam that you can choose an oil from yourself.
