    Robert-

Sorry for the delay.....the Chevelle with the 502 is in storage off site, was able to stop by today. Here are the dimensions for both:

    454: 5/8" high and 3 3/8" wide.

    502: 11/16" high and 3 3/16" wide.

A note..... The 454 emblems are actually three separate pieces, set into drilled holes in the fenders per the assembly manual. The 502 emblem is ONE piece with 3M sticky tape to attach to the fender. I chose the placement of the 502 myself, not like the 454 which is closer to the bottom of the SS emblems.

Hope this helps.....let me know if you have more ?'s.

    Robert,

ONe thing I'll caution you about with using a test light IS the light in the handle. Remember that a light bulb is a resistor, so there is a chance that it could make it read funny with it in there. If you have an odd reading, take the bulb out and just test it with the spring in the handle. You don't want added resistance when you're checking a resistor. As I said, two alligator clips on a wire will do fine too.

The only dumb question is the one that's not asked, especially in this case! Why drop the tank and go through all that when you can easily test it to verify it works.

    Hi Robert,

I don't see my other message, so I'll post here too..

Just to be clear, the in-trunk connector I'm talking about is the one that the single sending unit wire actually plugs into.

My "test probe" is simply a screwdriver looking tool with a 2 foot wire plugged in on top (W/ALLIGATOR CLIP AT WIRE END) and a pointed end at the end of the screwdriver part. You can also use a simple wire with two alligator clips on it for this test too as long as you can get a clean connection on that trunk connector.

Take one clip, make a firm connection with the trunk connector. Take the other clip and clip it to the brass post on the sending unit. Now take the ground wire on the new sending unit and ground it to a good bare metal spot. You could even temporarily extend that wire with tape as long as the connection is secure. Make sure everything is tight, and switch the key to on.. You can now move the float to various positions and watch the gauge.

    Hi Robert,

My "test probe" is simply a small screwdriver looking tool with a 2 foot wire plugged in on top (W/ALLIGATOR CLIP AT WIRE END) and a pointed end.

No need to be embarassed..We've all needed clarification on stuff!
