: 1970 Ash tray falls open
Mr69 Aug 14th, 05, 4:44 AM I recently purchased everything to convert a 1970 sweep dash to round gauges.
The reproduction ash tray doesn't have a spring like the sweep ash tray and I cannot feel any detents.
What holds the ash tray door shut ? Am I missing something here ?
I'm in the process of doing this swap this weekend.

72silverchevelle Aug 14th, 05, 11:11 AM Just use the spring from the sweep. There should be one on the SS dash. It is that way in '72 al least.
My ash tray falls open as well. I did not do the swap myself but it is from a 1970. I had not gotten around to see why it falls open. I guess I need to find a spring for it then.

zoopete Oct 11th, 05, 10:18 AM Hello I am new here and I have a lot of questions but I will start out small ones and work my way up lol .I have a repo ash tray for a 70 dash and it came with two little clips. dose any one know how and where to atach them thanks for the help and yes it is a SS ash tray..
1badss396 Oct 11th, 05, 10:36 AM I had the same problem long ago my springs broke. I did find that almost all 1970 chevy trucks use the same springs for the ash tray. 1 spring per side.
zoopete Oct 11th, 05, 9:47 PM If it is any help I orderd the dash from sonney 24 off of ebay he has helped me alot but I would like to talk to other peoples thanks again Pete
Mr69 Oct 11th, 05, 11:22 PM It's funny that this thread got revived today.
I was just going to post about where to find the springs.
I still need to finish the little odds and ends of this dash install.
The car is at the stereo shop now, but I will have it back by the weekend.
Does anyone know where to purchase these springs new ?
Is the sweep dash ashtray spring the same as the round gauge dash ash tray spring ?
I have the one rusty spring from the sweep dash. I'd rather use 2 new ones.

Mr69 Oct 11th, 05, 11:34 PM Checked that same seller again and they have the springs.
hate to spend $17 for 2 springs, but might have to.
I wonder where I could find this gauge of spring wire and just make them myself !

SS4Real Oct 12th, 05, 1:24 AM Somebody's going to ask how they are installed and a picture is worth a thousand words.....oh yeah, take out the ashtray first (any maybe your radio) from behind the dash, install the springs, and then reinstall the ashtray. Trust me, it's a lot easier this way. One spring on each side.

Mr69 Oct 12th, 05, 3:37 AM Thank you for the picture.
That is great.
By the looks of your spring, there is a bend on both ends.
I don't see a bend on both ends of the ones on eBay.
1badss396 Oct 12th, 05, 10:53 AM Nate just keep the duct tape on your ash tray. It goes with your contrast colors of your duct taped ss stripes on the hood, and pink shades of your interior:D Thank you for the picture.

To my knowledge these springs are not repopped. Have to find used ones or use ashtray from a 71 or 72 - no springs
