I want an original type steering wheel for my 66 elcamino but I'm not sure what one looks like. My interior was redone sometime back in the 70's and I really have no idea what it should look like. If it had a blue interior would the wheel be blue? Does anyone know the address of a site I could look at to see? It's amazing how many chevelle/elcaminos you can look at in a magazine or through the window and never see a stock wheel. And magazines usuallly focus on the outside. Thankyou for any help. P.S. a picture of the door panel and dash would be sweet too.

Mac, Here's a picture of my dash and steering wheel. Sorry, I don't have the door panels on yet. Yes, a blue interior would have a blue steering wheel.

Click here, and scroll down through the cars. Click on the '66 cars, there are several interior shots. Also you might consider a reproduction "wood" 2 spoke wheel if you can't find an original one.

Maybe Mike Crown will post, he should have a few pics. for you to look at also.

Thanks for the pics guys. They really get my blood flowing. I can't wait to aquire a correct steering wheel. The way I'm doing my interior is solely for my own pleasure, I'm not too worried about being "correct". That wheel will be a lot prettier than the cookie cutter grant that's in the car now. Should the piece above my glovebox say "chevelle" or "elcamino"? It says chevelle now and will the steering wheel be the same? Did they have a SS steering wheel in 66? Talk to yall later.

The reproduction wood wheels are JUNK.
These repros don't look correct, the coloring is poor and are too shiny.
also have a tendency to crack and split.
Don't waste your money on one.
Pay up for an original wood wheel or use the standard wheel.

The 66 El Camino wasn't available as an SS and therefore doesn't have any SS emblems anywhere, but I think an SS horn button was available for the SS396. There were no El Camino emblems used in the interior either; the steering wheel horn button says Chevelle. The 2 spoke simulated wood wheel was an option in the El Camino.

The script above the glove box will say MALIBU. Not sure you can see it real well in this pic of my interior, but perhaps it will help.

Bruce, I don't think there was an "SS" horn button for 1966, they all said "Chevelle". Above the glove box, it will say Malibu (no El Camino, and the "SuperSport" emblem actually went over the "Malibu" script)...

Doesn't make a big difference, since you don't care to be 100% correct, But, Malibu/El Camino Custom and SuperSports had 4 small chrome trim "rings" on the rim of the steering wheel, while the lower-end models (300, 300 Deluxe and base El Caminos) did not...

BTW, 1966 Chevelles used 2-spoke wheels, but 67 went to 3-spokes (I've seen alot of people advertising 67 wheels as 66)...

Your correct about the 66 wheels not having a SS on it. I didnt care much for the 66 wheel and my 66SS had an old aftermarket wheel on it when I got it. I liked the look of the 67 much better because of the 3 spokes and found a nice one at a swap meet. It had a Malibu horn button on it so I got the repro SS cap and put that im my 66 instead.
