This Chevelle i am planning to buy has a Black vinyl top (red car, black interior, buckets)....

is there any way to take the vinyl top off so it has a normal roof... its a sin to have a vinyl top on a chevelle.

If only i could be living in 1970, i could have a brand new SS-454 ls6 for the contents of my bank account.... oh well

...and I beg to differ. However, you can remove the top, grind off the rivers,do some body work/ALOT of sanding, and paint/blend the roof to body color.Chances are though, you'd need to repaint the whole car.

I "de-vinyl'ed" my 70 Malibu after its second paint job. Should have done it the first time. Unless the car is always garaged, vinyl tops do nothing but grow rust around the back window.

There are seams on the top that are 1/4th to 1/2 inch deep that are filled with seam filler. I recommend you dig this all out and replace with a good body filler, or, even better, lead it in.

The rivet posts at the bottom of the rear window must be ground off and smoothed and the bolt holes must be welded closed.

Make sure you kill all the rust that's hiding under the paint. Especially at the top of the windshield and along the front window posts. Take your time and replace metal rather than throwing bondo at it.

Good luck, I think you'll like it better without vinyl.
