I have a 72 Chevelle SS 454 cubic inch with 300 miles after total rebuild, engine, transmission, etc. I was driving it today. About two miles from the house I noticed white smoke coming out of the drivers side exhaust. Pulled into a parking lot and the temperature gauge was way beyond hot. Grabbed a hold of upper and lower radiator hose and both of them had pressure on them. No leaks any where. Could it be a stuck thermostat? If so should I just leave it out? Any ideas about white smoke? Thanks for any help or sugestions!

Did by any chance you smell the white smoke?
Did it smell sweet? If so you are probably burning coolant, i was told white smoke is probably a head gasket.

Pull the spark plugs and keep track of which cylinder they came from. Compare the plugs from the left bank to those from the right bank. They should all have the same color on the business end. If you have one that looks much different, then the engine could be losing coolant through the head gasket. I went through this in a 400 sb that had destroyed the head gasket around cyl 7.
