Been in the body/paint business for umpteen years until I retired last year. I don't remember ever paying near retail prices for paint until today. I moved back to Ms when I retired so I lost all my connections. I bought a gallon of DuPont Chromabase color to do my 58 Impala...color ONLY...I already have all the other stuff. Listed retail was $289. After getting on my knees and begging for a discount, I still paid $243. + tax! I almost asked if the paint came with a defibrillator so I could get my heart restarted. Sheesh!!
For nearly 20 years, my jobber usually gave me all the materials for my personal vehicles. When I did pay for something, it was billed at the shop's fleet price schedule. I entered the REAL world today.

For those of you who plan on doing your own work, prepare for some big bucks. For those who have a shop do the work, this may help you understand why it's so expensive.

Vettfellea. you made me laugh, Was at Kline's auto supply in Allentown last week and watched a guy WIg out when handed a bill close to $600 for a box with 4 cans in it.
1 gal chromabase,1 gal chromacolor, 1 gal spot clear and 1 qt. activator. not sure of the color as the reds ect are higher unit price. As I left he was in heated negations ( the paint was mixed so I assume he had some leverage) But you sure get sticker shock .
how about Primer last checked Street price of Vir-Prime and activator was above 85.00 a gal. Not %100 sure but think Uro-Prime is even higher !

I remember My fist paint job.
1 gal of mis- matched lacquer ( blue) 4.00 @
B-Auto. and sprayed it with my Mom's Kirby Vacuum cleaner. You talk about crop dusting
but what do you want for around $7.00
paint 4.oo
thinner 2.00
tape 1.00 two rolls

We come a long way baby $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

WayneK, we must have done our first paint jobs about the same time. Mine cost $4.00 for a gallon of white and $1.75 for the thinner. A month or so later I got brave and did my 62 SS convertible---a gallon of red was $5.75. That was 1965...

Gotta go back today for the Uro prime. The last price I remember was around $80. a gallon plus the activator at fleet price. I seem to recall retail was in the $120. range, but that was two price hikes ago. I suppose I'm repaying DuPont for all those NASCAR tickets/plane fare/hotel room/rent car things they gave me a few years ago. It was too good to be true.. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif
