Hey guys,

I just finished doing a search and reading all of the topics on replacing windshields. Several of the articles suggested using replacement studs and some recommended replacement screws. I like the idea of using small stainless steel screws to re-attach the clips. You can get them at the local hardware shops and they wont rust. 283V8 said that he used them but didn't indicate how he liked them. Is there a problem with using the screws? Seems alot easier than fooling around with the studs. I am not worrying about originality as you will never see these screws once the moulding is installed.

Thanks, Clyde

I go with the screws when ever there is even a hint that the stud will need to be removed for rust repair.

I have looked at those rusted studs on cars for the past 25 years, I don't see why you would ever "WANT" to use them. I think they were a cheap way to quickly install the clips at the factory and were one of the biggest blunders auto makers ever made.

My '65 Skylarks have screws from the factory on the sides of the windshield posts, and they had NO rust there. But there was some rust on just about EVERY stud.

I have a few theorys on why they rust so bad. I have looked a lot into this. Even the studs on the sides of a quarter for the vinyl top mouldings rust quickly, why? I have came to the conclusion that the "head" of the stud actually shields the base from getting paint on it! So they leave the factory with little to no primer or paint on the base of the stud! Plus there is the FACT that it is impossible to slip the clip on without scratching the paint off! This is why I suggest brushing the "pinch weld primer" around the clips liberally after you have slid them on the stud.

Now, using screws will not eliminate rust alone. You need to put a little "dumb-dumb" strip caulk under the clip as you screw it on. You could also use a dab of the urethane window sealent.

Thanks Martinsr,

I am definitely going to use the screws and 5/16 tape with sealant on the edges.
