If my memory serves me correctly, there is one nut on the heater box that can't be removed unless the r/h inner fender is removed. Since my car is completely disassembled for paint, is it a good idea to reverse the offending fastener to face toward the inside of the car instead of facing outward? I was thinking about removing the fastener from the interior part of the box and welding it to the cover to allow for easier removal/installation of the heater box should it ever need to be removed again.
Has anyone ever done this?

I forgot to mention that my question relates to a 68 el camino

Tim,
You are correct - the inner needs to come out to get to it.
However, you're smarter than me and thought of a better way to put it back together. I hope I don't have to do it again until I take the car apart eventually...

It's the bottom, right bolt as you face the heater box from the passenger seat. I loosened my inner fender and still couldn't find it.
I don't quite understand what you're suggesting. I'd want to keep the bolt head inside the car, and would recommend welding a nut to the firewall.

That's a brilliant idea right now I have all my front sheet metal off. I replaced my heater core with a new one but I punctured the core tubes trying to put it into the box. I plugged it up with POR putty but I would feel safer having the option of a reversed bolt.
Which fasteners would be the best candidates for reversal?

could you just leave that nut off?

I think I'll just pop the stud out of the interior part of the heater box and weld a nut to the outside cover. Then I'll just put a bolt through from the inside. Then I'll be able to assemble the heater with the car assembled. Looks good lasts a long time!
I don't really want to leave the nut off if I can get away with it.
