Just as I thought...the "Quick Solution to Chroming" Aliens got another one...dammit!

Our 'Men in MonoChrome' almost had 'em, too!

As a side note...I have discovered a process that turns unanswered posts into 1970 LS-6 Chevelles and then into L89 Corvettes...and then back into unanswered posts...anybody want to hear about it? :)

Ask a question like this and then not return to give us the info. Real classy

By the way, I visited a museum where the only 1965 Z-16 convertible is displayed with full documentation proving its real. Im not telling you where it is either. :clonk:

Oh, I also ran into a guy that has a couple of 70 Chevelles for sale in some old barn. Seems one is a hardtop and a convertable. I got to his place to check them out and he showed me both cars and POP's and window stickers he had. Seems they are both LS6 cars. He liked the performance of the drag car so much he wanted the 450 horse engine in a convert. For some odd reason he hasnt been keeping up with the market and has no idea what he has. He wants to get them out of his way and I dont have any money to by either...So im not going to tell any of you where they are. Hows that? :waving:

JK, Sorry, I couldnt resist. :p

He might be talking about the silver leafing process. Ive done this. It isnt perfect but looks damn good. You can get it at any crafts store. Practice first on spare parts. works on metal or plastic. try it!

Alright, if Drew won't tell us we can go back to the topic anyway...

Don't know about the silver leaf, but "Bare Metal" can be used. It's a thin, adhesive backed aluminum foil that's used by model builders. You cut a piece slightly larger than the area you want to cover, put it on and press it down with Q-tips and trim it out with a sharp hobby knife. It's not difficult to do once you get the hang of it, but requires some patience and a steady hand. If you goof up, it's pretty easy to remove too.

I use it for chrome trim on car models, and it looks quite realistic if you apply it carefully. I have tried it on interior trim in cars as well, and it works for small details. However, if you try to cover a larger piece, it tends to bubble when it gets hot, so one hot summer day is enough to make it look bad. I don't think there's anything to do about that, as the adhesive is trapped under the foil and can't evaporate. It's also a bit fragile, so it scratches easily. I wouldn't use it on any exterior trim, but it's ok on the interior.

You can find it in most good hobby stores, and Hobby Lobby carries a similar product that seems to be thinner. It looks a bit better but is more difficult to work with, so I prefer Bare Metal. I think this could be what he was talking about.

My appologies everyone.... It's been a hectic couple of weeks. The instructions are done as is the dash.... I am going to attempt attaching them. If I have problems, I'll let you all know. I have attached them so give it a try. Other wise, I will send then out to everyone that responded.

Again, my appologies for being so late getting back to you all.

Wow... I have read about Alclad II in several hobby magazines, but had never imagined that someone would take the time to mask and airbrush something like that! Very nice job! How many hours did you spend on this project?

BTW, I noticed the 1:25 Mustang kit in one of the pictures...:)

DrewC
Aug 19th, 05, 7:39 AM
All total, it was about 2 hours to clean and repaint, about 2 hours of masking, 3 hours for airbrushing the gloss black with an over night set-up and probably an hour for the chrome.

Sorry about the FORD product.... I reached and grabbed the closest item.

One more tip, I am going to try some brush on clear to seal it. The only down fall right now is, if it's dinged, it needs touching up. Olle, how did you get to see it BTW?

Can you use a regular brush to clearcoat it? I haven't tried Alclad, but other silver or metallic paints can smear if you brush the clear on them.

BTW, there's a link in fatboy's post above.

Drew, you certainly are lucky, Dude.

This is stuff they used on R/C Car bodies (Lexan). And it stands up to a brutal bashing that R/C Car (**ahem** Drivers), give their cars.. So I don't think there should be a durability issue... Also, the paint is a polycarbonate paint made specifically for lexan, and other plastics, so I think it should hold good...

Everyone... again, my apologies for not responding. Very busy at work and preping for two college kids.

The solvent was bought at a hobby shop - you can also use distilled alcohol.
Some other tips along the way... if I were to do it again, I'd use Krylon's semi flat black paint on the d-board. I would take my time in masking the areas, more time in between... 7 to 10 coats of the gloss black as well as time in between 7 - 10 coats of the Alclad II chrome. I bought the chrome from Squadron Hobby - they're on-line. But the best tip I can give is - take your time and apply light coats.

I plan to do the vent louvers next.
