I can tell your for sure, you need to pull the motor on a Big Block and everything I have read in the GM service manual you have to on a small block as well. I hope someone can help you that has done it. Good luck.

You should not have to pull the motor with a small block.

You don't "have to" pull the engine, but you WILL have to lift it enought that you'll WISH you pulled it.

Might as well rip 'r' out, you'll do a better job with the gaskets and seals. I don't know about you, but I HATE "prostitution" jobs. (Those that involve working while laying on your back.)

Clock the damper at, (I think?), the 5:00 position so that the counterweights are better turned up out of the way!

AND place some short 2x4's under each mount so the sucker can't fall on you!!

WORK CAREFUL..

NO, and you don't want to put it under it anyway b/c it is too little AND weak, imho!!

Look for a 12 bolt that fits.

Hope this helps and probably somebody else that know's more about this than I do will chime in here?

69Malibuproject,

I just got done doing exactly that on a 1968 with a small block, basically the exact same as a 69. Just a ballpark of what you have to do is this, it's not complete. First, you need to pull the dist out, and I would also suggest the driveshaft. Next remove the tranny support bolts and shifter (I hope it's a standard). If it's an auto, you are on your own, my brothers is a 4 speed.
Next remove the motor mount bolts (the long bolts), and jack or pull up the engine. Place the 2X4 under the motor mounts, just as Pdq67 suggested. If you can, place as much wood as you can, even if you have to use strips of plywood. Next unbolt the pan, and drop it down as much as you can. You need to remove the oil pump next, and this will not be easy to get at. Once you drop that into the oil pan, you can start rotating the engine, so you can back the pan out. I would suggest that you remove the spark plugs ahead of time, I did. To get the oil pan out, it's a real tight fit, and just about impossible to do, with the rear crossmember in place. Once you get the oil pan out, you'll wish you had done what Schurkey recommended, to start with. If you haven't pulled the engine by now, remove the rear main cap and replace the rear main seal (noting the direction of the larger lip). Offset the rotation of the rear main seal it's 1/4 and make sure to seal it, etc. Next, replace and retorque the rear main, making sure to use oil on the bolt threads. Next set up the new oil pump at the same heigth as the old one. Remove the spring and tack weld the pickup in place. After it has cooled, reinsert the spring and make sure the pin is secure. Now with the oil pump in the pan (but not the oil pump bolt), place the oil pan back under the engine (yelling at the pan helps alot). Reach up and in the pan, and pull up the oil pump and insert the screw and snug it up by hand. This will take a little bit of time to do and is not that easy, believe me (but it sounds easy). Now, all you have to do is place you gaskets on the Oil pan with your sealer, and let it dry a little. Button up the pan, drop the engine a bit, put in your crossmember, and reinsert the mount bolts, dist, plugs, etc and you done. Then wonder why you didn't listen to Schurkey, like I will next time.

Fred.

They do it again when the pan gaskets start leaking....at least that was my experience the one time I did it. Don't forget to disconnect the radiator hoses, gas line, linkages. You might have to remove the trans dipstick tube to get clearance at the firewall. I'd remove the fan shroud and fan to protect the radiator. Another half hour and you can pull the engine and work on it standing up and make sure the gaskets seal up ok. Can also freshen up the paint. Good luck.
