My 71 has been collecting rust flakes on the floor of the trunk. The source is the lip around the trunk cover seal.
To fix the problem, I have removed the rubber stripping, applied a phosphoric acid gel (light dilution) to treat the metal and will repaint with a zinc primer. I will paint it up, put back the rubber and keep the seal well lubricated with silicone.
(The acid gel is usually used for treating rust on chrome, but I find it does any job. It leaves a paintable coating after a neutralising with water. It's not strong enough to do any real damage.)
My question is, how would you deal with this problem?
That is a lot of metal to replace. Or I might get Krown Rust treatment to spray their oil under the rubber?
A welding job I do not have the tools or know how for.
It's worse on top and bottom than the sides of course. I'm planning a professional clean-up next spring. A frame off would be nice but I would never get my money back. It's a 4-door, even if it is in mint condition.
