Somehow I got a virus or something on my computer that was running Windows 98se and now I can't get windows to load. I'm planning on going with Windows XP so thats no big deal. I put the hard drive in another Windows 98 machine and transfered all my files, but I don't know how to find my emails. I'm using Outlook Express 6. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Found this with a google search:

"you should be able to import your mail folders into your new installation of OE. First, search your [old] hard drive for *.dbx. That's the extension for all of your mail folders--one dbx file for each folder. ...... Now go to OE and click on File | Import | Messages, and browse to the folder containing your old mail folders."

Good luck.

Not the expert on this but used ABC Amber one time back. It won't put the old emails back into your new email but does recover the text.

I did what Slowtalker suggested and imported what I needed. I've never noticed the import option of OE. It did take a little time to locate the *.dbx folders, but everything is fine now.

Thanks again,

Jim

Importing anything from a "virused" installation of Windows to another installation of Windows is risky business. There is a good chance that just as soon as you boot the new operating system and it sees the old drive, you probably inported the viruses first thing.

Thanks for the input Gary! I haven't rebooted yet, but the other computer I'm using is an old 233mhz that I don't plan to keep using. The main thing I needed was some important phone numbers in the emails. I have written them down so I'm ok. I plan to install xp this weekend.

If it were my computer, I'd boot it from a Windows 98 floppy or the Windows 98 CD, and browse the crippled drive from the command prompt until you find the file where your emails are stored. Then copy them to a floppy. This would be much safer than allowing XP to see the entire drive. XP is a virus magnet and will find just about any virus instantly if allowed to do so.

Just install XP and an anti-virus program. Update the AV program. Then install the old drive, scan it for viruses, fix what you find then go get your email.

Just a note...if you are running 98se then you probably have 256 mb ram or less am i right? okay probably. Remember that at start-up XP needs 244 mb to run smoothly. Everyone is going to XP but it is a resource hog and 2000 is much smoother. If you do upgrade then make sure to get more memory if you don't want to deal with a slow system. Just my opinion...oh yeah YAH CHEVELLES! i'm out
