Have any of you guys had any doings with QA1 shocks on the front of a 66 Velle?I plan on doing some T/T with front shocks, Koni,C/,E however I see that I need to modify my lower control arm to accept the QA1's.Before I go butchering up my car(which I really don't want to do)can anyone give me any help or hints on the install? Thanx much.

I think your talking about clearance for the adjustment knob?? On my 70 I had to cut a little bit of steel on the lower to clear the adjustment knob. I just used a die grinder wwith a steel de-burring bit. Didnt have to cut that much!

Thanx, but is a 70 control arm the same dimension as a 66? Has any one here done these mods to a 66? Thanx again for the input :)

What modifications are you thinking of making to install the QA1 shocks? If you are installing the shocks from the bottom like any other shock you may need to grind some clearance for the adjusting knob. If you are installing QA1 coil overs, they install from above the lower control arm and you have to grind down the shock mount nuts which are welded to the control arm and then open up the bolt holes slightly. Either modification isn't that difficult.

With regard to the lower shock mounts, 66 and 70 control arms should be the same though the 70 versions sometimes have clip nuts while the 66 arms will have welded on mounting nuts.

Rich, thanx.I am planning on installing the shocks from the bottom.Hoping that I didn't have to go thru a big mod to do it.Thanx for the reply, now I know. Have you or anyone you know done this? Question being when adjusting,is there room to put your hand thru the top of the botom arm,or do you have to go thru pulling the shock down? Again thanx for the help

Considering how they are made, I'd think you would turn the nob from below through the shock mounting hole. If you have large fingers, it might be tough to do! I'm no expert since as I said mine are coil overs and the spring mounts above the adjusting knob and the knob is above the top of the control arm and fairly easy to get at.

I have them on my 67. I was going to use the stock control arms but decided to get another set and modify them. I didn't have any problem turning the adjusting knob. I started 4 clicks up and then backed them down to 2 clicks. I'm happy with the ride and I haven't bottomed the headers since I put them on. My ride height is about an inch higher than with the 2" drop springs I had in w/KYB shocks. It's actually harder adjusting the spring up. Make sure you get the Torrington bearings and use anti-seize on the threads of the shocks. Here is a pic of my lowers modified, I cut off the coil spring bucket from where the shock bolts up and welded a flat plate in for a cleaner look and it works too. http://community.webshots.com/photo/206888440/397241826XqofSD#

There is a place in Maryland that has a really good price on them. Here is a link for his Ebay auction, but you can call the store and get the same price.

Onebad66,
Like I said in the earlier post, I had to grind the lower just enough to clear the adjuster knob (Not much). I also went through the bottom. I installed the shocks so the knobs face to the outside of the car. When adjusting, I have to use two hands. One set of fingers through the top of the control arm, the other through the bottom. Real easy and I got some big paws. Dont sweat it, just do it!!
