: Sad Sad Day
EMcIllece Aug 7th, 05, 12:01 AM We went and ran our Malibu, not good. The thing is still popping and farting, but here is the sad, sad results.......I guess I'm not too proud to admit I'm getting my butt kicked my this car.

Here is video. Please keep in mind that this is a 58 year old man driving down the 1/4 mile for his first time. This is a car I built for my dad and we are working on getting the bugs out of it. He never took the engine over 3000 rpm. Kinda funny!!

still beats my honda......
BillsCamino Aug 7th, 05, 9:25 AM Unless you got out of the throttle on the second half of the track, your car definitely has a fuel delivery problem. Could also explain the popping (lean).
JUNK YARD DOG Aug 7th, 05, 10:00 AM whats the problem with a 58 year old man, guess im to old to race anymore.im sure not going to tell one of my friends thats 62 and he will put you on a trailer in a hurry, bill i agree looks like he lifted after the 1/8th.one thing for sure the other car was long gone
EMcIllece Aug 7th, 05, 11:13 AM No, nothing wrong with a 58 year old guy in the car. I'm just saying he has never done this, and it was his first time down the track. I know of a guy here that is around 75 and runs in the 8's.
He did lift out of it just before the 1/8th mile. He was at about 1/4 throttle, just taking a learurely drive, it start diong it's thing, so he lifted.
GOSFAST Aug 7th, 05, 11:27 AM A little off the subject, however, age has nothing to do with this "hobby". Someone very close to a customer of mine recently (2 years ago) got a speeding ticket out here in N.Y. on Sunrise Hwy. He was clocked at about 95 MPH driving his mint 1970 GTO. He was 92 years young when the ticket was written! He's still going strong and refuses to slow down. We don't condone his actions, but we have no control over them either. Thanks, Gary in N.Y.
Bomber '67 Aug 7th, 05, 11:37 AM I have a young friend who had poured much time and parts into a late model Firebird. It seemed like no matter what he did he could not break into the 12 second zone, always in the 13's. Finally another friend hooked a computer up to log the runs. Instantly the problem was solved - he was lifting off the accelerator during his runs. Now he runs 12.6x's with no other changes than keeping his right foot firmly planted.
The time slip and the video show that your dad is lifting off the accelerator. His 1/8th mph exceeds his 1/4 mph! Most likely the 8 second car completely demoralized him. Or maybe it was the poor state of tune that has the car popping and farting. Either that, or you had talked him into doing something that he is not interested.
Fix the problem - ignition/fuel - then go back to the track.
Thomas
EMcIllece Aug 7th, 05, 12:02 PM Yeah, it is poor state of tune. The car and all parts on it was totally his doing. He showed up at my door one morning and said he was going to go buy this car, and asked if I would go get it. All I did is put it together and transport the car to the track. Oh yeah, and try getting it right, that will come with time.
Dude! You have to change the title of this post. Nothing sad at all about a father/son getting out to the racetrak to test a car out that the son built for the father. :beers:
ak69 Aug 7th, 05, 12:43 PM Sad Day? That's a GREAT DAY. The very best time I have ever had at the track was with Mom, Dad, and family. Borrowed a helmet for Mom, we blasted off a 12.4 pass down the track. Pop made a couple of passes with the hammer down and won heads up against another 12 second car! He said he could have ran quicker, but did not want to tear up my car (he knows how to race the stripe!)...........told him that never bothered me driving his cars when I was a kid. Get back to the track with Pops...........any time with Dad(not ET related) is a GREAT TIME!!!!! :)
EMcIllece Aug 7th, 05, 1:06 PM Thanks guys. You are 100% correct.
