A hoist with chains. If you try to lift it manually, all your gonna do is hurt yourself.

Engine hoist with chains to the front driver's head and rear passenger head, or intake manifold plate. Bolts on in place of carb and has a big eye hook in the middle of it. Without heads you have to find some places to run the bolts in, for the chains. Problem is you don't want to ruin a machined surface by bolting a chain to it and there aren't many places left now that the heads are off.

Use a short piece of chain and some old head-bolts and washers and lift away! The chain doesn't have to be cinched down which might scar the surfaces, but just run the bolts and washers in GOOD!!
I would lift from the pass. side rear to the drivers side front!

I put a piece of metal between the chains so there pulling straight up, then I double nutted the the grade 8 bolts with a sleeve so the chain will swivel.
You might not need to go this extreme, but I just painted the block and didn't want the chain to touch the motor. Maybe this will help.

One other good option to use would be a load leveller which can be changed to switch the load, so that the engine can be lifted at a angle. It helps out a lot, especially if you lift it out by yourself, and if the transmission is still attatched. They are not very expensive, and saves some time.

A load leveler works great. Used one with motor and tranny all bolted together. easy
