I’m getting my firewall and cowl area ready for paint. I will now show that my knowledge of Chevelle paint is on the opposite end of the spectrum from martinsr.

I will be using an Eastwood semi-gloss black topcoat to try and match the factory color. When I was striping the old paint it was a very thick coating on the firewall especially on the cowl forward of the hood seal and around the cowl tag (same on the pass side). The finish was textured and had developed an alligator look cracking pattern. The thick coat looks like it was meant to hind spot welds on the cowl. Is this coating original? If it is, how do I reproduce the look. Would just a prime/paint be more durable?

Mike, Yes I believe that coating is factory applied. I have seen what you described on various cars, some have considerably more than others. On my car the coating on the cowl was brush applied, with some spray texture on the firewall itself. I am not sure what you could use to recreate that look? I stripped it all clean, primed and painted BUT I was not restoring to that "original" look, to me that stuff is just butt ugly http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Thanks,
I agree it is butt ulgy. I like the look without it and I'm thinking of not reappling.

Mike,I also am working on my friewall,I used a spray on stripper and then tried por15 satin black, but I did it on a hot day and it didnt flow out the brush marks. So I striped it again and reaplyed the por but still have some brush marks. So tomorow im going to strip it yet again, and use eastwoods underhood black spray bomb.hope it works out this time.I tried it on the wiper motor and pump and it looks real close to orig.Just make sure to wear a mask, its some wicked stuff....
