: The new Scat 6.385 I beam rods?
lance-w Aug 5th, 05, 1:13 PM Has anybody tried these yet. The horsepower rating has gone up 150hp. Makes it comparable to a H-beam for less money. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=7990890773&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT

Horsepower has little to do with rating a rod's strength. Reciprocating weight and RPM would make more sense.
GRN69CHV Aug 5th, 05, 3:09 PM You may find this hard to believe, but there are a lot of Asian forge shops that have very high quality standards. In fact, China's Boiler Code (the equivalent of the ASME Nuclear Code in the US) is even more stringent than our's. The issue isn't Chinese ingenuity, the question is whether or not the companies doing the subcontracting are paying attention to quality audits when setting up subcontracting operations and whether or not they perform lot product analysis and include destructive analysis on batch lots. If the final machining is done here, the finish quality can be controlled somewhat - or so you hope.
lance-w Aug 5th, 05, 3:13 PM Can we please NOT turn this into a Chinese parts are/aren't crap topic. Thank you :D
GRN69CHV Aug 5th, 05, 3:39 PM Lance, did you read the same responses or are you making an assumption? He is asking a legit (???) as to how these get rated higher and I have offered that the import products that I am familiar with go through very stringent quality controls. I guess we both offered the same thing - maybe not in the words/phrases you want to hear - but I agree with Schurkey. Possibly a great product for a reasonable $$$, but I am curious to know how they validated the claim and what quality control is going into these. The HP claims are becoming somewhat significant and are approaching an area that historically would have only been satisfied with parts selling for 2X, 3X the price.

Sorry, Just didn't want it to take off in this direction.....
ricks_67 Aug 5th, 05, 4:40 PM Aren't the Ebay prices cheaper because they don't have to follow the same price rules that Summit and Jeg's do? Eagle SIR rods on Ebay are about $100.00 cheaper than what Jegs and Summit sell for. As long as these guys on Ebay get the same quality product as the catalogue company's do there shouldn't be a problem. Summit sells a Stage 1 & 2 Summit brand rod that looks exactly like a Scat rod.
jbird Aug 5th, 05, 4:45 PM For what it would cost you to install new bolts, resize, bush for floating pins, and balance a stock set of rods, it's hard for me to say these wouldn't be a great deal. I have seen gm 3/8 bolt rods live for many years in 600+ HP, 6800-7000 RPM engines, as well as the 7/16 dimple rods. I would have to think these would be MUCH stronger, as long as the machining was done correctly.
Bob West Aug 5th, 05, 6:15 PM I'm just leary of ebay or somebody you don't know very good, how would a person know or not know if they were blems or seconds? Whats Mikeys price on those? He likes SCAT cranks, and so do I so far :D
Ken K Aug 5th, 05, 8:11 PM If they are so good, why do they use American rod bolts? I guess nobody has heard about some of the rods with the bolts that look like wrought iron LOL.
