I am also planning on doing this in the spring to a car I just picked up, but I had planned on shooting the base and clear, then scuffing the clear and painting the stripes, then clear coating again. I have heard that the base coat dries very fast and can be striped in as little as an hour, but I dont want to risk it. I am used to shooting enamel or polyeurethane and letting it dry 24 hours before adding stripes! Maybe someone knows the best way to do this paint scheme with the BC/CC?

I'll tell you, I know people that tape on the base coat and "get away" with it. I myself just can't do it. I clear and then sand the whole panel with 800, then paint he stripes, unmask and clear the whole thing. I have to say that those stencils are GREAT! I did a '72 SS a while ago and had the whole thing done in less than an hour!

i thought the correct way was to paint hood and deck lid stripe color first, then tape off stripes and do the main color last then clear coat. any more opinions

Not a painter here, but have participated in this twice. After the base flashes (40-60 minutes, depending on conditions), tape and paint the stripe. Then clear. It melts together and there is no ridge.

I have to agree on painting the "stripe" color first. Letting it cure, and then applying the stencil kit. Shoot the finish color and pull the stencils after about 45 minutes. There's an article on it in Super Chevy Oct '00 issue. GR8RIDE.com

This process may be done wither way. Stripe color first, car color 2nd. car color 1st, stripe color next. People differ on the process. GM had the car color 1st, stripe color over the car color 2nd. Of course, clears were not being used then, paint was usually acrylic lacquer.

I will painting the stripes on my 70 also, so any more suggestions on this would be great. I'm using single stage PPG Deltron Acrylic enamel paint system.

BTW, there were 2 different stripe widths in 70. In April 70 the design (main stripe width) was changed. I purchased stripe stencil from OPG*. Will this be the correct stripe width for the early or late design? My car was built in Jan 70.

another word on stripes,i have a friend who is excellent with an air brush,he suggest painting a large tear in my hood with a couple of arms coming out and some eyeballs in the foregrond. you know like the old hot rods with monsters driving them is this guy crazy or what.could be cool? maybe

We just painted one this week, and I agree with Alan. The 1st base coat cured for about 1 hr., applied stencils, stripe color, removed masking right away, let dry a little longer, applied clear coat, sanded and buffed the next day, and boy is it slick. You can't even feel the edge of the stripes.
If it does lift the base coat, just go back and spot it in. That's what is great about BC/CC, it's so forgiving.
Good luck with your project,
Dan
