: Anyone into Old Honda motorcycles??
74bowtie Aug 3rd, 05, 5:24 PM I ask because I just picked one up this past weekend, It a small one a 1972 Honda CB100 streetbike. It is in super shape 10,000 miles on it. I could not pass it up for $150.00 being so clean. I have looked it up on the web it has a whole 11.5 hp I am looking to freshen it up and use it a little and take it to some shows for the heck of it. Is there any place on the web anyone can recomend to get parts like brakes tuneup stuff gaskets and such.
Professor_SS Aug 3rd, 05, 5:51 PM I've got an SL 125, same engine basically. Bought it new in 1970, just never got around to getting rid of it. It has survived some enduro racing in the 70s, teaching two wives and 3 children and a couple of lady friends how to drive a bike, as well as years of me thrashing it around beaches and fields. So far I've rebuilt the carb and replaced two dozen clutch and front brake handles and mounts (dumping it really busts them up) and I've knocked a few dozen dents out of the tank, but the basic engine is sound after all these years. the things are bullet proof.
1BLACKHARLEY Aug 3rd, 05, 6:29 PM Sounds Like You Got A Great Deal On Something That's Going To Be Years Of Fun. Congrats.....

You might still be able to get some or all of that stuff from your Honda dealer. If not, do a Google or Yahoo search for an independant parts distributor named Rocky Motorcycle Parts.
69velle Aug 3rd, 05, 7:01 PM I got a 1966 305 Scrambler, has rust in the tank after sitting for 14+ years...get that fixed and she'll be ready to go. Now if I can just find the time and place.

Rick,
You've been a busy man!!
Own any oil wells??
Those old SL motors were very durable and were in a lot of different bikes over many decades. A couple of friends had TL125 observed trials bikes, I've personally thrashed a number of XR100s & 80s. The CB, XL, XR, TL, SL series bikes all used that engine. I still have the last new bike I bought, 21 years ago, an '84 XL350R (different family of engines). My bike looks like it is maybe 1 week old if that despite slogging through Beverly Swamp, Rankin Ski Trails, some daily driving in Toronto downtown and many railroad crossing jumps at crazy speeds.
Hondas are probably the best of the Jap bikes for getting parts for older models.

I used to but then I had two wifes and several Lady friends
pdq67 Aug 3rd, 05, 8:43 PM I had a Honda 90 and a 160 Street Scrambler that had side-pipes up high years ago..
And I always wanted a '70's Honda SL 350 twin "trail" type bike. I think it is the one that you could take down the road, but yet play in the ditch too??
It's two black exhaust pipes stuck out angled from the front on each side like an old Triumph's chrome exhaust pipes did.

GRN69CHV Aug 3rd, 05, 9:27 PM I had one of those - back in the 70's. Used to unbolt the mufflers - instant drag pipes.
Randy Mosier Aug 3rd, 05, 9:35 PM All of those bikes were fun. In the 70s when I was in high school, everyone had some sort of street/trail bike. Honda had the SL series which later became the XL series. Yamaha had the LT street/trail bikes which were redesignated as DT in 1974 after undergoing a frame redesign. Kawasaki had the KE series with the rotary valve induction two strokes. And I think Suzukis were RM series.
These bikes were loads of fun to ride and were cheap to purchase, operate, and maintain. They were street legal with lights and guages and turn signals, but they had the high mounted fenders for offroad riding. I think Suzuki is the only manufacturer that still makes a street/trail bike, although I think you can purchase a lighting and speedometer kit for Hondas.
NiteOwlNY Aug 3rd, 05, 9:38 PM The oldest Honda I own is a 1989 CB1... My wife wants to keep it and I want to sell it so it just sits... Kinda pointless to keep my bikes since a car accident in 2000 has left me unable to ride anymore....

If you were closer,I'd take it off your hands. CB1's are cool.
Sorry to hear you're unable to ride, anymore.
Old, fat, bald guy Aug 4th, 05, 12:47 AM And I think Suzukis were RM series.

Zooks also had the TM series way back in the early 70's.
all of the manufacturers still do a "street / trail", once the were called "enduros", now they're "dual purpose"..... yamaha has the XT's, zook has "DR's", honda's have the "XL's" (i think) and the kaw's are "KL's"....... if you want to "think big" the BMW has the "GS" series, Triumph has the "tigers", ........ Ducati, aprilia, etc........ i think the only people who don't have dual purpose bikes are MV and Benelli...... (does Harley count????? i've seen A BUNCH of those in the grass along the hiway......... granted, they weren't MOVING, but they weren't on the road either :D )
rubadub Aug 4th, 05, 1:30 AM E-bay has helped us out a lot on the older stuff.
Rob
GRN69CHV Aug 4th, 05, 7:56 AM Harley (correction - AMF/Harley) had some off roaders back in the day. A buddy had the 350 thumper Harley dirt bike. Not too smooth, but it was a torquey bike.
67shovel Aug 4th, 05, 8:53 AM I've got a 1971 SL350 that I got of Ebay. Have found the parts I need there too. Needed a new petcock and went to Honda. The guy looks it up and says "what else do you need?" I was surprised they still carried parts for the old stuff.
74bowtie Aug 4th, 05, 4:21 PM I'm going to try the Honda Dealer and see if I can get some of the items I need.
pdq67 Aug 4th, 05, 7:50 PM NiteOwlNY,
Sorry to hear that you can't ride anymore b/c my long gone Crippled Buddy was paralyzed from the waste down after getting run over the day after the night before on his KHK Hog WAAAY back there.
He bought himself a '58 'Vette stick, rag-top back about '61/'62 or so and put a hopped up '64, 375hp/327 Fuelie motor and 4-speed in it. He used a hog throttle on an Orschlens Brake Lever fork-truck e-bake as a clutch actuator. Then a hand brake between his legs! Drug the h-ll outta it, but had to have a buddy along to shift it!!
Worked great AND I have shifted it for him many a times as kid back in highschool..
He, He!! he used ta have us kids lift him up on his front fenders to change plugs and such, then he would say, "Throw me down on the creeper and push my worthless as- legs under the car so I can get at the clutch linkage!!
He would cuss and carry on and tell us kids what wrenches he needed and when he was done say, "Grab my feet and pull me out, I got it!!
He and the older guys and gas station Mechanics in town taught me a lot of what I know and I am ever in their debt! I miss my long gone Crippled buddy, But I hope he is in a better place riding his Hog!!
That's one reason I try to help the young ones around on the Boards b/c the old ones helped me..

NiteOwlNY Aug 4th, 05, 9:41 PM I'm lucky I'm not paralyzed, I'm told I could be a quadrapalegic if I'm not careful, I have a neck injury....
I love the old bikes... I'm hoping medical science gets a little better and they can put disks back in instead of spinal fusion and I'll get to ride again.... I'll stick with playing with my cars in the meantime...
dadeo-3 Aug 4th, 05, 10:11 PM I have been riding a 1983 CB1000 Custom with the dual range transmission for the last 4 years. Fun bike.

when i was a kid that was my DREAM bike. i had this little suzuki 80 and one of my friends had this 64/65/66, somewhere in there, not sure which year honda 305 scrambler. i thought it was soooo cool. it was one of those things that was a big deal when you were a kid that you never had but never really forgot about. if i ran into one in restorable shape i would be VERY tempted. EDIT: i just realized that i said dream bike and there was a similar model to that 305 that was a called a honda dream (i think) but that is NOT the one i was referring to, it was definetly the scrambler. the "honda dream" was a different deal altogether.
Jim Mac Aug 4th, 05, 11:58 PM It's not a motorcycle but I just picked up a 84 200S three wheeler. Jim
71chevelleconvtble Aug 5th, 05, 8:30 AM I still have my bikes which I bought new. 1982 Honda XL500R with 3,500 miles and a 1983 Honda ATC250R which I used to race. No place to ride my three wheeler anymore but I still get on the 500 for an occasional ride. I used to get parts from Dennis Kirk but it's been awhile.
Randy Mosier Aug 5th, 05, 10:04 PM Zooks also had the TM series way back in the early 70's.

The Suzuki TMs. That was what their designation was! There weren't as many of them in our neck of the woods as there were of the other three brands, mainly because there was no Suzuki dealership close to us at the time. We had dealers for Honda, Kawasaki, and Yamaha nearby where I grew up, but for some reason, the closest Suzuki dealership was in Houston which was about 100 miles from where we lived.
pdq67 Aug 5th, 05, 11:27 PM Another one of our gang had a Honda 450. I want to say, "Street Scrambler(??)"!
It had the high pipes on it and sounded like a 1000 Kow with a Kerker on it but only two cylinders!! He, He!! it seemed to rpm forever!!
I would call it the very first of the STREET "Brawler" bikes b/c it was fast and the biggest back then until the 750 came out shortly..
And of all the bikes I have seen to this day, I still want a 900 Kow Eliminator!!
But honestly guys, I don't have the brass to try one on for size!!

Olle Apr 24th, 06, 11:01 AM Two pages, and no one has mentioned the CBX? You guys are getting old... or maybe you're not old enough to remember? ;)
68KMENO Apr 24th, 06, 11:15 AM they're not honda's .... I can't belive Nobody's talked about the ORGINAL racers... the Kawasaki H-1 & H-2 s if your not old enough to remember them ..... just think FAST!! 500 & 750 3 cylinder two strokes that had insane power bands kind of like an on off switch :) .. or maybe you were into pocket rockets ?? the Kawasaki A-7 avenger 350 twin - yamaha RD 350's I owned them all ... its a miracle I'm still alive ;)
rubadub Apr 24th, 06, 1:04 PM I had a 1973 h2 kawasaki, in 1973, they were pretty fast.
Rob
I remember riding a friend's Honda CBX. That thing would get you high just listening to the exhaust note (he had a 6-into-1 header).
I remember riding an old Kawasaki 2-stroke triple. There was no way you could grab a handful of throttle on that thing and still keep the front wheel on the ground.
Those old Kawi 900s were the next generation of crazy bike. The swing arm would flex and cause some funny handling. I knew a guy who inherited one from his friend that was killed due to that very phenomenon.

texastornado Apr 24th, 06, 7:04 PM That's a sweet CBX, 79 or 80 model? How much do you want for it, I'll take it off your hands, I can tell you don't ride it much because it's so clean..........:)
Randy Mosier Apr 24th, 06, 8:14 PM Almost forgot about Hodakas. Remember the Wombat?
Old, fat, bald guy Apr 24th, 06, 10:40 PM they're not honda's .... think "hinge in the middle" :p not the best handling bikes..... but they were great in a straight line
or maybe you were into pocket rockets ?? the Kawasaki A-7 avenger 350 twin - yamaha RD 350's I owned them all ... its a miracle I'm still alive ;)
my father had an RD350A..... 1973 burgandy low pipe model..... if you ever run across one, let me know.
OrrieG Apr 24th, 06, 11:45 PM Honda dealer still has most parts for them, I've got a 69 Trail 90 and have been able to get everything I have need over the last 20 years. It was a $50 basket case when I got it so it needed alot. Honda used a lot of the common parts over a number of years and models. Street sleeper in the late 60's was the Suzuki X-6 Hustler. I had a 68 Ducati 250 Scrambler in the 70's that was set up for track racing.
Rich69RS/SS Apr 25th, 06, 9:59 AM About 6 years ago I bought a 1990 XR200 Honda from a guy who bought it brand new for his wife to ride. She rode it once or twice then said that's it and it sat in his shed, I came along bought it rode it a few times and it sits in my shed. This bike is brand new and a few guys have offered to buy it off me but you can't beat a 4 stroke just air the tires fresh gas and oil and go. She's a keeper and I'll never sell it. Wasn't the old Kawi's 3 cylinder bike called Mach 3's ? I rode one and those bikes were FAST.
chevelledude71 Apr 25th, 06, 10:12 AM I bought a 1980 Honda CB750F SuperSport w/26,600 miles on it last week. It needs a paint job by a professional, other than that it's in great shape.
chevelledude71 Apr 25th, 06, 10:13 AM http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v448/ktownkid/cbx.jpg
This one looks somewhat like mine (origianl color).
NiteOwlNY Apr 25th, 06, 10:18 AM My first bike was a 74 Z50 and first streetbike was a 70 CB450...
69malibu3speed Apr 25th, 06, 11:07 AM I had a long list of Hondas starting in the mid-60's. Bought a CB-750 new in 69'. Some of the more interesting ones were a CB350-4 and an XL-250.
The only crummy one I owned was a CB-500 twin in the mid-70's. They enlarged the CB450 engine a bit and ruined it in the process.
chevelledude71 Apr 27th, 06, 4:36 PM Do you gentlemen know where I can get some exhaust pipes for these old motorcycles? I have the 4 pipes into 2 muffler type exhaust. Thanks
Hoovestol May 5th, 06, 6:08 PM I have a 1965 Honda Dream (CA77)
Got it in a trade in high school for plowing a neighbor's field.
305cc. Baby blue with a chrome gas tank.
I have never ridden it without someone asking me about it.
Lots of fun!
