does anyone recommend for or against painting the entire car in por15 then using por15 primer (tiecoat) which allows you to then paint the color? I figured this would protect the metal even if the car is scratched. it will likely not go through the por15. also this will seal the metal and it will never rust. the down side might be if you ever want to strip the car it could be a nightmare. and I guess if the surface is not rough enough for the por15 to stick to it could come off in big flakes? does anyone have experience either way? thanks http://www.chevelles.com/forum/confused.gif

POR-15 is NOT to be used as a base coat for an automtoive paint finish.

What you should be looking for is a metal etch (if bare metal), then an epoxy primer.

POR-15 is for undercarriage & frame stuff. Great stuff, but tad pricey.

thanks http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif but you did not say why not. I mean the technical reason. would you think it would be ok for the inside of the floor and doors. I would assume it would be good for the underside of the floor and wheel wells. I am confused why it would be good for some places and not others. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/confused.gif basically in the areas it should not be used, exactly why ? thanks I don't mean to anal retentive. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif

FO,
I would think that the two chemical compositions of the paint and POR would cause some catastrophic results if not undesirable results, but then again....you won't know until you try it right? So why not try it on some old sheetmetal laying around and let us know how it works?

thanks Joe,
por15 makes a product called tiecoat which is a primer to be applied directly over por15 for painting. with out this product the paint or any other primer will definitely not stick. por15 does not even stick to por15. they want you to paint multiple coat will still tacky to get good bonding. so this tiecoat product allows you to paint over por15. even knowing this I am still wondering if anyone has done this.

As best as I can tell, you hit on the reason why not...stripping it again or needing to get back to bare metal for some reason (get a dent, etc...) would be a bear.

Por is designed to stick to rusty, rough metal, not clean sheet metal. Also your primer/sealer has to be sanded with 400-600 grit paper before applying your paint.try to sand por 15 with something that fine and see what happens. There are epoxys and urethane primers that are made do what you want.If you rally want to do it i would contact the cmpany first.

FO,

Reason not to...

The "Best" surface prep for POR15 is a sand blasted surface. So you would have to sand blast the entire body of the car. Not a good idea because the blasting will build up heat and could warp your body panels.

You basic point of protection is well founded so if you wish you could hit just the strategic areas pron to rust, ie., bottom of fenders in and out, inside bottom of doors etc.

Once this stuff dries it doesn't move so be cautious with where you put it. I've used this product extensively on my 69'. The entire chassis POR15 then top coated with chassis black, the entire suspension syst, entire bottom of the body, front inner fenders and core support. I also stratiegicaly did the inside bottom of my doors and the inside of the fron fenders ect.

Also be sure to have a high quality respirator and good ventilation... This stuff can be very dangerous if inhaled.
Especially if sprayed.

I am currently working on applying POR-15 to the bottom side of my 69, did the interior of the car before the big resto. Would not recommend for "primer coat" if for no other reason than the sanding issue. Really like this product. Not really all that pricey when you consider the coverage you get with a quart of this stuff. Picked up a can of Chevy orange for the big block on the stand, its gonna be pretty! Can not even think of any thing else that is harder to remove from skin, get yourself a bunch of those "doctors gloves" to go with that respirator!
