I have a large amount of pits in my deck lid, pretty much to the point that I should replace it. I was looking for info on a way to remove the rust from the lid, pits and all without sand blasting due to the sheetmetal being so thin. I heard from a friend that media wont remove all of the rust. Naval Jelly and water????

you have a few options: you can either try to replace the rusted areas with new metal, but this sometimes causes rust on the areas where you welded. or you can try one of the many products that are available for rust. jelly works well sometimes and there and proucts made that are supposed to turn rust into primer, but i don't knoe if those work too well. so you can do whatever you want, but don't take it to a shop that will put a pop can in replacement of the metal.

By all means dont sandblast that deck lid, the sand will wrap sheetmetal leaving it with waves and ripples. What type of media are you planning on using, plastic willnt remove rust as where baking soda will. The best way to remove it would take it to a commerical stripper. There they will dip the entire part into a solution that will remove all traces of paint and rust with out hurting the metal.
Have you tried using a da sander and 80 grit paper to rid the pits?...sometimes that is all that is needed...Eric
