: One more question on the suspicious L-78

Hey guys, in all this hipe about my "suspicious L-78" Chevelle it never occured to me to check for myself on what was been argued about the build sheet issue. Here's the email i got that really got me worried.
It reads: Sir..what you are saying is Authentic Documentation for this Chevelle in your other auction,is indeed homemade paperwork.
There are so many red flags on the buildsheet,it is ridiculous. The 1970 L-78 Chevelle was not built past the first week of December 1969.The VIN# for this Vehicle is shown in the plant records as being built in the end of May,1970,yet your buildsheet is showing April 1970.The CJ coded rear is a 3:55 NON Posi call out,yet your buildsheet is saying it's a 3:31 Posi.
The 3:31 Rear was not possible behind the 1970 L-78 Chevelle.
The Carburator call out of HH is indeed a Rochester suffix, not a Holley,as was standard on the L-78.There are many more inaccuracies on this buildsheet.
Can you please explain these? End.
In this email he points out that the carb code on my build sheet is "HH" for a Rochester but i looked for myself and it is in fact "GG BG" on the build sheet and then he says the rear end code on the sheet is "CJ" for a 3.55 non posi but on the sheet it's actually "KJ" . So it obvious he was not looking at the sheet right and has me very concerned about it's authenticity. Are the codes i posted right for what they should be. I also received another email from another gentlemen that explained that you could order just about anything if they had it available and if someone thinks that if they had a 396-375hp motor available and someone wanted it that they wouldn't process that order then they're fools[they being GM], and that it is very possible that a L-78 Chevelle made it out after the beginning of the year. So as you can see i'm very confused and afraid i might be giving a very rare car away way to cheap. Is there a web site i can go to and do some research that will break down these codes for me because at this point i don't feel comfortable with the info i've been given alone to make a educated dicission. Any help is greatly appreciated. Also in the email i posted he says "in the plant records" where can i view this info, thanks again Mike.

Mike, I'll leave the details of buildsheets up to those more well versed.

Let me pose a scenario and let you tell me how it would play out:
Let us suppose for a moment that on the busy assembly line floor that several months, a third of a year, have gone by without a single installation of a certain kind of engine because orders were no longer being processed for that engine because of the availability of a new more powerful engine. Then an order for the old engine comes through - so they stop everything and hunt down an engine to fill that order.

How likely is it that:
1) The foreman would care about one mislabled order and decide to put everything on hold while an old part is hunted down.
2) That a discontinued engine would be left on the shop floor for everyone to trip over it for months while they all wait for "that one last order".
3) That when the dealer called the customer and told them "sorry, but the 375 hp engine you ordered has been discontinued, would you like 450 hp instead", that the customer would say "no way man, 375 hp is better".

As the high horsepower musclecars become ever more valuable, people will continue to test the marketplace with all manner of imaginative ploys. Honest people will buy the more clever fabrications, only to fnd out later that they have been duped. The shame of it all is how often people will buy a "rare" car first - then ask questions later! I have a friend who bought a yellow 1970 Buick GSX 4 speed Stage1 455 ... well, that's what he THOUGHT he had bought. Post purchase research revealed that it started life as a red GS, not a yellow GSX, etc.

I see your point, but again is there a site or somewhere to look to break down these codes. I don't want to just sell my car off of a scenario ., thanks Mike.

Mike,

Your buildsheet is not real. PM or email me and I'll explain it. Asking someone to accept that a Chevelle was built with an L78 engine in March of 1970 with the wrong tachometer and no smog equipment really is asking a lot. Is it possible? Perhaps. Is it probable? No.

Ok as far as the smog equipment i did not put it on the car when i bought the new exhaust, i didn't like the way it looked and since we were not intending to sell the car at that time it didn't matter if thats what it came with,[which is really the only thing we opted to leave off] as it says in the ad this is a reproduction exhaust system. And the tach, temp gauge and volt gauge were all missing when we got the car so we bought these items off of this site a couple years ago and were not aware we bought the wrong tach until we listed the car for sale and was told so. My email is lafnrat632@aol.com, please email me with any info that will help, thanks Mike.

I saved your Buildsheet,Cowl Tag,VIN Plate & engine stamping pix you posted on Ebay before you deleted them, and noticed you show your Chevelle was built at Arlington Texas plant.
I have compiled a database of all the 7 plants that built the 1970 Chevelle for years, and am 100% sure your buildsheet & it's other pertinent information are Homemade.
Whoever made your buildsheet picked the wrong plant to try & pass this off with,as Arlington was unique from the rest of the plants, and did things differently from the rest in Type set and design.
Your Buildsheet is a smorgasbord of the Arlington,Baltimore,& Kansas Plants build codes combined, that contradict eachother as well.
I too see the VIN# you show for this Vehicle recorded as a Late May unit, yet your buildsheet shows an April 20th Assembly with the wrong date design as well,Arlington is known for their odd date design on their Buildsheet, not as you show.
Also the 1970 L-78 Chevelle was only produced for the first 100 days of production, before being phased out completely for the LS-6 engine in december 1969.
Based on all this, your Buildsheet,Cowl Tag,VIN Plate & Engine stamping,I feel the waters have been so muddied on this chevelle, that it's true Heritage is lost forever.
I have saved all the pix & text that you have posted about this Chevelle for future reference should it come up for discussion again.
