And it runs great. Seems to run at about 190 degrees or so, but I didnt take it too far yet. I went to get gas about 4 miles away, and there must have been a show somewhere, cause I saw 2 Chevelles, a 68 and a 70, a 67 Camaro and an old rat rod of some sort. Not together, they were all in different places. They all waved as they went by, it felt good to be driving the Chevelle again.

No leaks of any type, it runs good at all speeds, but the idle still needs a little tweaking. I wants to stall when I come to a stop, but doesnt...but it still makes me nervous, I want to keep a foot on the gas just in case. If I turn the idle screw up a little, it idles too fast. I'll work on it, that's no big deal. I have about 10" vacuum at 950 rpms. Timing is about 14 initial, 40 total and all in by 2800 or so.

Combo on this one is:
Mark IV block, 4 bolt. Stud kit on mains. Scat 1/4" stroker crank. Scat 4340 I beam rods, 6.385. SRP forged pistons, flat top. Floating pins. GM rect. port heads, 3964291, 2.19/1.88, bowl blended but no other port work. Heads were milled to 100cc chambers. Team G intake. Holley 750 VS carb. Howards Cam, custom grind solid roller, 250/256 @ .050, .655/.663 lift, 108 LSA. Crane lifters. Block was bored .100, decked and pistons are .005 in the hole. Used .038 head gasket for .043 quench. 3000 stall converter, TH400, and 3.73 gears. I also went with a 4" cowl hood, and got rid of the scoop. I have to update my pic on here.

How many miles should I put on easy before I drop the hammer on this puppy!!! I wanna see what it will do. :D :D John

I broke my 454 in on the dyno and have treated it the same way since it went in the car. I run all my engines the way I plan to use them from the first trip out. I don't believe in the 500 mile break ins. Just change the oil a couple times after cam break in and hammer it.

as long as everything is tuned right so you're not too lean on jetting or too much timing where it might detonate, etc, then i'd say romp on it a little. i wouldn't try and find out where valve float occurs or anything, but don't see the harm in running it up to wherever it makes peak hp.

I broke in my SBC on the dragstrip. Break it in like you plan on driving it.

THink about changing the timing. Step up to a bushing change to limit mechanical to about 20-22 and move the initial way up to 18 - 20.

Thanks guys. I'll mess with it a little more today. I have a curve kit for the HEI, I'll see what I can do with the timing. I would like to run more initial timing, but was worried about the total. Maybe that would take care of my idle/stalling problem too.

Chris, I will do my best to be at LV this fall, as long as it's not on either Rhinebeck or Burlington VT weekend.

Of course, its better than the old motor! John, that stalling on stopping is typically the rear float being set too high. Check it when you have it out again.

Man, I gotta race a 505 at LVD this fall huh!? Better get all my 427's ponies on line!

Talked to you a couple of times via private message and I'm glad you're up and running.
My setup will be very close to what you have with the exception of the cam. I'm about 2 weeks out from being ready to go.
Congrats and keep us posted!

Jeff

Scott, I'll give you a call later today. Actually, I have to look at a job on Curt Blvd...maybe I'll just stop in!! Gene, thanks, the float level would be a very easy fix. I'll check it today. Jeff, yep, I remember chatting with you. I thought I would never get this done, I actually started back in Feb. so I wouldnt waste the whole summer. With all the setbacks I had, I almost did just that. Im glad the worst is over now. Good luck with yours too. Like I said, I did a video clip, but it's just over 8megs...I have to figure out how to get it down in size, and I'll get it posted here when I can. Computers are not my friend, usually  John

Quick, get it to the track, I wanna see what it runs, then figure out where I went wrong with my slug :D The TH400 gods don't like me right now, I guess its making a little too much torque for them :). The 2-3 shift is a little lazy on mine, when I shift 2-3 the rpms drop to 5000, just takes a while for 3 to fully engage, made 6 passes yesterday 90+* heat, 4000 density alt, blew the tires off and ran 10.26, then 3 9.50's a 9.45 and 9.47,,,,60ft times were 2.05,1.59,1.59,1.58,1.57,1.57,,,mph were all between 106.2-107.8 which wasnt too far off my best of 109.6. I think the new gears were helping the acceleration, then losing all I gained with the lazy 2-3 shift. :(
