Looking at a 1970 chevelle convert. Supposed to be a factory SS396 car. No paperwork available. Currently has a 454 so numbers matching is not an issue. However, is there a way to tell from the vin or other way to verify it was/is a real SS and not a clone?

Any specific areas to look at, things to look for.

Well without Paperwork, there is NO 100% sure-fire way to determine whether or not this is a true SS (unless built in Canada). There are several tall-tell signs.. Like 12-bolt rearend, Round Style Speedo/Clock/etc., cowl hood, etc..
