I have tried using a da with 80 , 180 , 220 grit. I have used an orbital sander with 40, 80,grit. I have gotten most the rust off, but there is still a darkish stain in the metal where the rust was. It wont seem to come off. Does that too have to be taken off. Can someone suggest a good way of takeing rust off completely.

I think that a picture of that stain would get you more answers...

I would say a licquid rust remover for metal would work just great.Cant remember the name of stuff I used. But I had a blownish stain i applyed this stuff witch was greanish in colour let it sit for a bit than washed it off no stain nothing.Go to you local parts store the got what you need.PS never saw rust or any problims in the areas i was working on even 5 years laiter.I used a tooth brush to work it in to the spot.Good luck http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Try a metal prep. Something with a mild acid in it. This should remove the rust/stain and leave a little zinc behind to help retard future rust.

Try Ospho. You can get it at paint and hardware stores.
