: 65 Convertable..Is it as rare as he claims?
Limoridr Jul 25th, 05, 10:09 PM Hello! This is my first ever post but I've been reading the forums for a while.
I wonder if someone can point me in the right direction, I hope.
I've come across a 65 convertable Chevelle. The dude is telling me only 600 were made. Can someone confirm or deny this. It is a Chevelle 300 that had a 6 cyl. originally.
I just need someone, anyone, to convince me to fork over 45-hunge for it.
I'm probably gonna buy it regardless of what anyone, including my husband, says.
But I am concerned about this so called 600 thing....
Thanks in advance
Stavros Jul 25th, 05, 11:01 PM I'm looking at the production #'s for 65 and I don 't see a listing for a model 300 Convertible. I have seen a 66 300 convertible so maybe they do exist for 65 as well but not in the books I have.
65 Malibu 6 cyl. convertibles: 3,388
65 Malibu SS 6 cyl. convertibles: 1,133
65 Chevelle 300 Sedan NOT Convertible:11528
Could you get the model# for the car? It is a small metal plate rivited on the driver's door jamb towards the front part of the car.
The numbers should be something like 13XXXX
This would help...

Mr69 Jul 26th, 05, 1:45 AM Back away slowly and calmly.
There isn't a 64 or 65 Chevelle 6 cylinder convertible on this earth worth 45K. Unless it has very desirable exterior and interior colors and has about 4 miles on it. Even if it's a Super Sport. It doesn't matter. 6 cyl Chevelles are not desirable. And they don't garner big dollars.
You should be able to buy a nicely restored 1965 SS 327 Chevelle Convertible for $25-35K. Maybe less !
There were 19,765 Convertible Chevelles made in 1965. The production numbers that Stavros gave above are correct. And there were no 1965 300 or 300 Deluxe convertibles made, 6 cyl or otherwise. All 1965 Chevelle convertibles were either a Malibu or Super Sport.
A popular trick used by some sellers today is to list a car as 1 of 600. They may be correct in the fact that, yes, their particular car is in fact 1 out of 600 came from the factory with power windows, OR rear mount antennas, OR Am/FM radio.......... You see what I mean ? It does not necessarily mean that only 600 of that model were made, but that 600 came from the factory with that particular rare option. They use this to make the car itself appear to be rare, when in fact it is not. And all in the pursuit of your dollars !
Nate
In Canada there was such a thing as a 300 convertible from 1965 through 1967. The production figures were alway pretty low (e.g. only 96 model 13267 convertibles made for '67) so a figure of 600 sounds believable (it almost sounds high). There is absolutely no way it could be worth $45 grand unless it was made of solid gold.
Limoridr Jul 26th, 05, 9:11 AM Hey, hey, hey, lets move that decimal point to the left 1 place.. Aw man, I only wish I had that kind of money to throw around.
I guess I just assumed, ass being the key word, that everyone knew that 'hunge' meant hundred.
Unless, of course, some one of you have a drop top worth a whole lot more than I'm willing to spend and want to unload it.....Uh, am I like being an ass again?

Thanks in advance for any and all info.
MedicTed Jul 26th, 05, 10:25 AM Don't let anyone tell you that a L6 car is not desirable. While it may not be a speedwagon, they are great cruisers.
Depending on the condition of the car, $4500 may or may not be a good price. You need to look for rust in the floorpans, in the trunk, in the lower kick panels (remove the interior kick panels), around the windshield and just about everywhere. Check the frame to make sure that it is in decent shape. They rust behind the steering boxes, in the area of the box section and they crack in the rear in front of the axle arch.
I'm not trying to scare you away from the car, just trying to let you be an informed consumer. :) If you buy the car, welcome to the small group of us that own and like L6's.

According to http://www.chevellestuff.com/index.htm (URL=[http://www.chevellestuff.com/index.htm]this[/url]) web site, this must in fact be a Canadian 300 L6 convertible. Sounds like a cool car.

I agree... A 6-cylinder car will not be as desirable to MOST people, but a convertible for $4500 sounds like a good deal, IF the body/frame is solid and its complete...
Don't fall for the BS about "1 of 600" or "Rare", etc as a way to "ask" for more money. "Desirability" NOT "Rarity" is what drives the value of these old cars. Some "rare" cars are more desirable because of the particular options (usually better equipped, or more powerful engines, etc)... This car is rare, because even when new it wasn't as desirable... A V8 powered Malibu convertible, while nowhere near as "rare," will be worth more and more desirable (There will always be a few that like 6 cylinders, etc)...
Sounds like it is worth a more thorough evaluation...
Mr69 Jul 27th, 05, 2:16 AM "hunge", to me, meant you misspelled huge. 45 huge ! Like 45 large.
I personally have never heard of the word "hunge" and I'm thinking that it isn't in the dictionary. Or is it ?
Nevertheless, your price adjustment changes everything.
BUY IT !
I mean, how badly can you get hurt for 4500 ?
Care to tell us the condition of the car ? Paint, interior, engine, etc etc.
How can you ask our opinion on the value and then not tell us anything about the car ?????
Nate
Limoridr Jul 27th, 05, 8:42 AM Sorry for the confusion. No, I don't think 'hunge' is in the dictionary, but anyhow...
65 convertable Chevelle 300, came from Canadian factory with a 6 banger.
Has a brand new top with boot. Has a built 305(which is plenty o power for me),3-speed auto.trans. All 3 seats are perfect. Door panels..yuck. Both bumpers have been re-chromed. The frame has been steel-tubed, has a fuel-cell in trunk. Mega beefed suspension. All mouldings and emblems are there and in pretty decent shape. Now...after someone put this time, effert and money into all that, I think they were running low on cash, and threw a horrible paint job on an even worse body job. From head to toe, bumber to bumper, the body is a real mess. I suppose it doesnt have to look good to turn a quick quarter mile, but I'm really on the fence with this. I seems like it could be a real fun car, but man, that body is embarassing-ly bad. But boy, oh, boy is it shiny(as my 4 year old tells me)
So for 45-hunge (aka 4,500.00), LOL, plus at least another 3,000 or more in body and paint...I ask, should I run fast, or jump in?
hmott Jul 27th, 05, 9:21 AM Let me just say pretty much no where will you find a nice body work, nice paint job, good running motor, nice interior convertable chevelle for 7500! So if you can get it for 4500 and put 3000 into bodywork and paint you'll be setting very good.
BusDriver Jul 27th, 05, 1:05 PM Runs? Drives? Top works? Decent interior and good solid body and frame? JUMP on it!
Sounds like a good excuse to learn some body/paint skills. If the metal is all there, maybe they just primed and painted it with crappy materials and didnt take the time to simply block it nice and smooth.... I'd get it.
Limoridr Jul 27th, 05, 7:46 PM Now I find myself in a real tizzy: The 'old man down the road',( you all know him well, he's the guy you've been pestering for years to buy his car, the car he doesn't quit know of it's worth!) Well, that guy has finally agreed to part company with his 69 Chevelle. I gotta jump on this one instead.
In regards to the Drop-Top, I cut & pasted an e-mail I got. I guess it is outta Canada.
Now, for the shameless plug: Anybody interested in this convertable??????
Apparently this is a Canadian Chevelle by the VIN. In 1965, Canada still put
the model year first, then series/model, assembly plant, and finally the
sequence number. So, 513167057644 breaks down to
5 ~ 1965
131 ~ Chevelle 300 series (6-cyl)
67 ~ convertible
057644 ~ the 57,644th 1965 Chevelle produced at that plant (probably Oshawa,
Ontario).
Body number is of no real significance.
Can't find any reference to a S03, 903 or any x03 interior code.
Paint code is missing but may not be of much use anyway except to maybe
narrow down the original interior color a little bit. Example, a yellow car
probably wouldn't have blue or red interior.
Bottom line, the claim of 600 units may very well be valid. The Chevelle 300
series convertible was only built in Canada. Is there any way you can get a
picture of the trim tag? A Canadian 65 tag is the only one I don't have for
'65.
If you and he have the time to wait, you can order a documentation package
from GM of Canada giving them the VIN. I have more info at
http://www.chevellestuff.com/tech/gm_of_canada.htm on how to contact them
and the last cost I'm aware of.
If it's in any kind of nice shape and price is right...jump on it. It's
truly different.

Ever heard of Dale Evans? :waving:
Limoridr Jul 28th, 05, 11:41 AM This Dale 'person' (I say person as 'it' may very well be a woman, or a confused man) sent me an e-mail that I copied for you to read. 'It's' name got copied also.
The only thing I'm confused about is which car to buy.
Oh, by the way:
Hello. My name is Kierstin. And I'm a Shop-aholic....http://www.chevelles.com/forums/images/icons/icon4.gif

Limoridr Jul 28th, 05, 11:45 AM Hey! Now I am confused! I tried to put an exclamtion at the end of my last post. All I see is a link to it. What the heck did I do wrong?

The exclamation that you used puts an icon at the title of the post. To put an icon in the post, use the drop down menu in the tool bars at the top of the text window. :waving:
Brian Donovan Jul 28th, 05, 1:40 PM Wheather or not it is 1 of 600 is of no significance since there have been so many mods to it. Sounds like a nice start to a hot rod though.
I was on ebay the other day and found a nice car one of less than 300 in the us.
It is a yugo gvx sport,
This is a good example of "rare" not being "desireable"

Limoridr Jul 28th, 05, 3:00 PM I'm confused...again!
Dude, why are you searching e-Bay for Yugos? (you left yourself wide open for that, LOL) I do see your point though. I got till late tonight to make up my mind on which one I'm gonna go with.
I'll keep ya posted. Now, let's see about this icon thing...
What the....?
Where the...?
Oh never mind! I don't feel like putting a stupid smilely face thing on here now :-{
136679ss Jul 28th, 05, 10:37 PM welcome, good luck on your decision to purchase a chevelle. either way if you do the restoration on either of these cars correctly, meaning not cutting corners; not trailer queen; it quickly rolls into shopping spree 2000. Even if you do all the work yourself your looking at an average of about 9 g's, and if you have a lot to replace more like 20 with your labor factored in. Again good luck. Jason.
turkman99 Jul 31st, 05, 6:22 PM $4500, I will take it. Fill er up and I will drive her back to So,California.
For that money, it's a fine driver.
