: Something stupid at the gas station
GWL Jul 24th, 05, 10:54 PM Yesterday, I pulled in to the gas station for a fill up and noticed another car was smoking under the hood with the owner staring at it. At first I thought his car was overheating since it was in 100's so I didn't pay close attention. As he continued to pump gas into his car, the smoke not steam coming from his closed hood was getting alittle more intense. A few moments later, I can see some fiery particles dropping to the ground so I yelled at him that his car was on fire. He took another look at his car and kept on pumping. About this time, everyone including myself left the scene. As I was pulling out the driveway, I heard a small explosion with a giant plume of smoke coming from his car. That finally got his attention but he jumps into his car and tries to start it up. I decided to round the block to see the aftermath, the guy somehow managed to move his car away from the pumps. What made it more insane there were people pumping gas a few feet away with the guy's car still on fire.
gigem Jul 24th, 05, 11:16 PM Saw that once, at a Shell station near my old house. Dude was trying to pull into the gas station with his car on fire! It died in the driveway to the station, and burned to the ground. I stood a safe distance away and watched it go. When that nearly-empty, vapor filled tank went, it was pretty wild. Dude had a wife and two little kids with him, all made it out safe. Cars burn pretty fast once they get going.
Cecil Jul 24th, 05, 11:34 PM Having "been there" I can tell you there's not much that's more scary than seeing flames in the filler tube of the tank - lucky for me the tank was full...
Chris R Jul 25th, 05, 3:34 AM I knew a guy that managed to somehow back into a gas pump with his mid 70's El Camino and damn near blew up the entire station.
I wasnt there to see it. But heard from several other co-workers "did you hear what happend to so and so today"? That must have been why he didnt show up to work that day.
After all was said and done, the island of pumps on one side were in flames 50 plus feet high. It was quite a specticle from what heard. It made our local news and the newspaper. The fire dept had thier hands full that day, its a busy area with school down the road just letting out. There were no injurys and he got him and managed to get the car away before the thing burst into flames.
haughty Jul 25th, 05, 6:06 AM oh man oh man= and the next fuel they are looking for us to use next is hydrogen... Someow, I am not feeling too good about that one either..
Can you say.... BOOOM??
Marci Jul 25th, 05, 11:09 PM Reminds me of when I used to work at a 76 station....this older couple pulled up to the pump with a under-hood smoking minivan. I ran outside and told them they need to get it away from the pumps. As I try to push it away, the guy realizes it's in Park....:clonk: Luckily we got it far enough away, and it didn't actually burst into flames. Some wiring got too hot and melted all over the engine.
Another incident happened just the other day. I'm driving to work and this lady pulls over to the opposite side of the road. Her car is just billowing smoke. I pulled over across the road from her and she gets out and goes to pop the hood... I shout to her "Don't open your hood!" and she asks me why.
Good thing the Sheriff pulled up....
67 GTO Jul 25th, 05, 11:56 PM When I used to pump gas (full serve) I had some idiot with a backfiring motorcycle try to fill up gas. I shut the pump off, and wouldn't let him turn it back on. Here he was, practically sitting on top of the gas tank, and I could clearly see flames popping from his shot muffler. He refused to shut it off, and I refused to let him fill - in the end my boss let him get a little, but nowhere near enough to fill it.
Had a chinese guy wanting to fill a glass jar, and he couldn't understand how there could possibly be a law against it.
I worry.

ROFL The trash can!
dittoz Jul 26th, 05, 11:02 AM Just yesterday, I'm driving behind a semi who's doing about 55 on a rural road and there's all kinds of cr** flying out of the box trailer. I fell back a ways and realized that my windshield now looks like the guys in the Cup races after 50 laps.
I pulled along side of him at a stoplite eventually and when he steps on the gas, there's a SPRAY like a hose of diesel fuel coming from around his engine under the cab!
I'm talking like turn on your garden hose and adjust the nozzle to a fan spray. Every time he steps on the gas...
I honked, waved, yelled... he never looked and I never did get him to stop but everyone who got behind him got a diesel shower.
Fortunately, diesel doesn't burn quite as easily as I recall...
Greg P Jul 26th, 05, 12:24 PM My wife teaches at one of our local high schools. About five years ago another teacher came into her classroom and said “your car is on fire.” She got out to the parking lot about the same time the fire department did. It didn’t take long at all for the flames to envelop the car. Luckily, it was a Friday afternoon and there were no other cars parked near hers. It was later determined that the fire started as a short under the dash – possibly in the light switch. (No, I hadn’t just worked on that.) Here’s a pix of my wife’s Lumina in its final, glorious moment: http://www.omnicast.net/~plummer/luminalburning.jpg

But when it does burn, it burns a lot hotter and longer than gasoline.
JohnH Jul 27th, 05, 9:22 AM Had a car fire that was due to a dried out rubber hose that was part of an inline gas filter. It was my fault I never checked the line before. I should've. Will never use rubber hose as part of a gas line again!
