: Parts washer .....................
LiveWire4x4 Jul 24th, 05, 1:45 PM Wasn't sure where to post this, so here goes. I have a large parts washer & need new solvent. Here in Calif. the stuff I had been using is now banned. All I can find is waterbased cleaner. Will this stuff work? Anyone with a parts washer out there? Thanks for any help. Brad
pdq67 Jul 24th, 05, 2:47 PM (5) gallons of unleaded !! BUT NO flames OR sparks!! OUTSIDE IN THE OPEN AIR!!!
Seriously, the guys were bragging up Castrol's Super Clean in the big purple plastic jug AND the darn stuff works great but does take some time to eat paint off valve covers and such..
I bought onna those thin, under-the-bed, lidded, plastic storage deals and have 3 or 4 gallons of the stuff in it now out in the garage.. I just keep the lid on it and make sure I don't hit it and make a mess when I am not using it to clean stuff. Drop a couple a heads in it and come back three days later and they are clean...
The stuff just rinse's off with hot water real good too.. AND it is GREEN!! Bio-degradeable...

PS., AND I have used Easy-Off Oven Cleaner too to remove paint off a hub!!
HE, HE!! How long is it gonna take to run the "riff-raff" outta the "NEW" South LA since they changed South Central's name so that they can create gated communities??
Where are the poor gonna move to???
Cameano Jul 24th, 05, 2:54 PM The boss had bought some of that vegetable oil based crap before. Worthless junk. He thought we couldn't get anything better. Also though we'd have a hard time disposing of it when it's dirty. I showed him how Solvoil works, and also how we could mix 15 gallons of it in with 1000 gallons of waste oil from diesel engines, and it's taken away by the oil pumper guys. ;) All is well now. I feel your pain on that water based stuff. I'd have to second the Castrol in your tank. Or, look for floor stripper in 5gal buckets, it's pretty strong stuff too.
Surfcat64 Jul 24th, 05, 3:32 PM Go to Home Depot and buy paint thinner. That's what I'm going to use when my solvent needs changing the next time.
BillK Jul 24th, 05, 4:11 PM Brad,
One of our two parts washers is water based. It actually works great but .... it is heated and I think that is what makes the difference. The only disadvantage to it is that you absolutely have to rinse the stuff off with water and dry it or it will leave a white powdery residue on the parts. The petroleum solvents are getting weaker and weaker all the time :( I hate them because even though they clean ok, they take forever to dry.
NiteOwlNY Jul 24th, 05, 4:36 PM I'm using the Zep heavy duty cleaner in mine... It was pretty cheap and I needed 12 gallons to fill mine, only drawback is it's not the best on aluminum....
ratuned Jul 24th, 05, 9:27 PM i need some fluid for mine also. it is in a unheated garage. i might not use it for 2-3 months then i do some work and need it. i can't use water based stuff because of freezing. i used the purple stuff but it all evaporated. how about mineral spirits? i want something that won't freeze in the winter. thanx mike
pdq67 Jul 24th, 05, 9:54 PM Best cleaner going is sorry to say, Methylene Chloride!!
Banned, banned, banned!!!
I bought some spray "Carb./Choke Cleaner" to clean my 3310- with AND the crap NEVER even got my hands dirty using a toothbrush!!
Bad, bad, bad!!!! And I remember when i could melt the crap off my choke on my motor!!
Cresol and Methylene Chloride is what you can clean almost anything with. Hot tank stuff -- AND I figure outside of Berrymans gallon pail of Carb. Cleaner, with the little basket, is about it..

JJ67SS Jul 25th, 05, 1:10 AM Ah California.... gotta' love it.
I've used the Crystal Drano in an aluminum tub of HOT water to remove paint and grease from engine parts. Valve covers, and greasy oily engine parts come out clean and without any paint. Just spray it off with a heavy stream of water, sand them up and spray them up. Let the residue settle in the aluminum tub for a day or so (after parts cleaning) and dump the upper drano water down your household drains.
