Hi Guys And Gals;

Need to know how to prep the gloss black primer on our '69 SS Hood. We purchased a "Beautiful" hood for our '69 Elke frame off resto project from Dick Brandt at True Connections in Riverside this past weekend.

After whatever it takes to prep it (sanding? thinners?), we will spray a coat or two of PPG Epoxy primer, guidecoat, etc. (same process as we have done for the Elke).

Restoration Part 4/Painting Your Restored Chevelle in our shop resto website doesn't address this subject.

Any and all info will be greatly appreciated.

is this a new hood?if it is i would sand it with a D.A with 320 grit paper.clean it with Final Klean or a similar product then apply your sealer or primer whatever paint system you are using.

Good to hear you got your hood. Remember the post some time ago about you looking for a hood? I had suggested you get it directly from the source so that you possibly incur no shipping damages and which may have also save you some cash and/or frustration if it was damaged during shipment. Seems like you drove to Riverside to get it. As for prepping the hood, I have always removed the black primer that was on these types of parts right down to the bare metal, than applied a self-etch primer or epoxy primer, such as PPG DP primer. I don't really know about the type of black EDP primers that are used on these parts whether NOS or repop. A skilled bodyman/painter can definitely give you some other professional advice on this.

I use a D/A and 400 grit paper for new parts. In nooks and crannies I hand-sand w/ 360.

Thanks a "BUNCH" each and every one of you members who helped us find our '69 Elke SS Hood.

It is brand new and very heavy in weight and metal thickness. The SS Grills are "Just Plain Beautifull" also.

I will also ask the owner of the body shop that we are renting a corner from what are his opinions as to prepping it for the PPG Epoxy primer.

Thanks again a "Million" everyone.
