: 69 ragtop parts car. Should I or shouldn't I?

I found a 69 ragtop in for sale but a huge about of parts in it. It's a Malibu with no rust anywhere. It comes with a bunch of extra original parts: dash gauges, moldings, 2 extra doors, etc. The car has pretty much been gutted but the frame and all sheet metal is great. The dude wants $5000 for everything. I know thats a lot of $$ for a parts car, but if you know my situation (69 L78 ragtop rust bucket) it may be a good way to go to get all original GM stuff for my SS. I'm really in a dilemma. Also, I have no where to put the car for a month so I'd need to put it into storage. Any ideas on how much it would cost in a self storage place? Gonna be hard to convince the wife to spend another 5 grand also. It sucks cause all the 69 parts cars I've found have been cheaper but are also in far away states. It would cost over a grand just to ship them here. I guess I could buy it and sell any of the extra parts. Here are some pics. Any tips?

When I look at the pics. I see an incomplete project car thats worth restoring in my opinion as opposed to just a parts car. From the looks of it, it appears to be a nice convertible and a good start for someone. Use what you need and sell the rest of extra parts you dont.

I agree with chris, sell the parts and build yourself a convertible.

I say part it. Cut the cowl off your L78 and weld it on that body. (Do not remove tags, swap the whole cowl) It's no different than what you're doing anyway, replacing floors, rockers, quarters, inner/outer wheel houses, trunk floor, etc.... and you'll have a much better car when you're finished, with all GM metal.

You'll easily spend that $5000 on sheetmetal made in Taiwan that doesn't fit as nicely and spend 10X as much time welding it together.

Gonna be hard to convince the wife to spend another 5 grand also.

Your kidding, right?!? She didn't think the spending was over when you wrote the check for the L78, did she? You have many more thousands yet to spend, my friend...

That car was for sale here for a long time. I know I saw it in the local Photo Ad for at least 6 weeks. It went from 6K to 5800 to 5200 to 4800 to 4200 and it's now on eBay. I never did go look at the car, but I do know the guy that had it and I know the guy that has it now as well. I'm sure the guy who has it now bought it specifically for resale. I'll bet he paid less than 4k for it.
So there ya go. There's some inside info for ya.
I was under the impression for some reason that it had lots of rust and thats why he couldn't move it. If it doesn't have rust, then it's worth the money easily.

Well it looks like someone has been primering R.F. L.F. fenders and R.R. L.R. fenders. Usually what happens after rust repairs ,isnt it?
hey, just think , if you buy it and it is full of rust, youd have a RustoRod:D

I already checked out the car in person and it didn't have rust anywhere I looked. THere was slight surface rust on the floor in the drivers area, but its still solid. Plus, I can make a killing selling all the original GM parts I don't need. I'm gonna call him up and buy it. It will save me a lot of time and trouble fixing my 69. Just where I'm going to store it I don't know.

I know man. Its the same car. I'm not paying 5 grand for it, don't worry. I'm going to get it for the original bid start price at the most. $4200. I saw the car on Ebay first, then it ended without any bids. When I go there on Tuesday I'm gonna try to get it even cheaper than $4200. For the needs of my L78 it's perfect.

I actually made the guy an offer after the auction and his price went up to $5,000. He said that he will include the motor for that price. I want this car too but I have 2 other projects that I need to finish first.
Good luck with the deal.

Dude, I've seen the motor and it's in really bad shape. It's been out of the car for a while and left in the elements. He can keep it, lol. I just want the rest of the car.
