I am doing an engine transplant, a 92 350 TBI with 700R4. I want to paint the engine Chevrolet orange for the "retro" look. My concern is, whether or not I can get good paint adhesion over the factory black paint. Any help on what cleaning technique and what paint to use would be appreciated. The car is going to be a cruiser rather than show, but I still want it to be sano under the hood.

Since your engine is out of the car I would proceed to strip the black factory paint off with a gel or aircraft type paint stripper. Once you've got all the paint off I would wire brush the engine and wipe it down thoroughly with some kind of solvent like lacquer thinner or acetone to remove all traces of stripper and final spots of paint. I used duplicolor engine enamel with ceramic. Sprayed on three coats and didn't touch the engine for a couple of weeks. The engine came out totally awesome. The paint was super durable and still looks brand new after two years of service. If your going to do it, do it right!
Iv'e heard that the POR 15 system is pretty good, but I still haven't seen an engine that looks as good as mine!!!

I used the POR paint on my factory black block. The POR rep told me that the black was OK for a base as long as I cleaned the block thoroughly. Used dish detergent & water to clean it. The paint went on fine & I haven't had a problem in 3 yrs.

I used the Chevy Orange form POR 15 the only problem I had were some small runs and it took months to dry. I thas a very high solids content which is good. But if I did it again I would thin it and spray it on.
