: Toughest paint for running boards on a 53 Chevy ?
zachscc Jan 26th, 04, 2:49 AM My dad and I are restoring a 53 Chevy 5 Window and have been wondering what type of black paint to use on the running boards so we can still step on them  We have been thinking of having them powder coated or even trying the POR15 snake oil treatment. Any better recomendations? We have them in K-38 primmer and ready to go graemlins/thumbsup.gif
sevt_chevelle Jan 26th, 04, 1:33 PM Zach,
Just the other day I use talking to the PPG rep about what to use on the frame related parts for my chevelle. He mentioned a new paint they are releasing or just was released, anyway he tells me that it blow away POR15 as in means of durability and ease of use.
He does custom bikes on the side and has been using this new product or some time. Has a resto shop in northern Iowa trying this stuff also on the frames as they were using POR15.
If you want I can do some more checking as I cant recall the part number. I do know its under the light industrial coating line...Eric
zachscc Jan 27th, 04, 12:22 AM Eric, that would be great, sounds like just what we are looking for. By the way did you ever ask him about that DP90 Like Epoxy that is aviaible in the industrial line??? I have been strying to find that post on here but have been having no luck :(
zachscc Jan 27th, 04, 12:31 AM Sevty, I found that post. Searched under light industrial, anyway it is EPX900 love to hear what your rep says about it. As well as that new part # for the bulletproof black.
sevt_chevelle Jan 27th, 04, 1:00 AM Its friggin 12am and am wide eyed :(
Anyway the rep normally stops by on thursday, Ill ask then.
I have asked about the epoxy in the industrial line. The number is epx900 but is NOT just the old DP epoxy relabeled, as the epx900 is lead and chromate free just like new DPLF.
Basically he said this stuff sprays better then DPLF and should be a better product in the long run
zachscc Jan 27th, 04, 9:00 PM Better and CHEAPER??? Sounds like I will be using epx900 :D
sevt_chevelle Jan 29th, 04, 7:58 PM Alright theres the scoop or somewhat the scoop. The part number is CRE9XP found in the LIC line. The product was stolen from Autocolor whom PPG bought out sometime ago.
All I know is that its epoxy based with a mix ratio of 3:1. He told me some other stuff but forgot graemlins/sad.gif
I have no idea if you can topcoat this product or what the recommened substrates are.
This is what he recommened for usage on frames, suspension anything that resistance to abrasion would be a factor. Basically he said its as durable if not more then powder coating...Eric
zachscc Jan 29th, 04, 10:32 PM Thanks Eric. Do you know where I can find a tech sheet on this stuff? I will try the web site but I dought it for the LIC line
sevt_chevelle Jan 29th, 04, 10:55 PM www.ppgrefinish.com (http://www.ppgrefinish.com)
LIC stands for Light Industrial Coatings which is a paint line of PPG, kinda like Deltron and OMNI
They didnt show the cre9x4 product but did show that epx900 expoy. You might want to email PPG themselves and ask. They are pretty friendly and answer emails within a few days
baddbob71 Jan 29th, 04, 11:21 PM Just some info, the epx900 comes in a yellowish color and can be tinted light, med, and dark grey by your supplier. If you don't ask for the tint it will come a lightish yellow. I like the grey-less chance for any rock chips standing out etc. This stuff has been working great for me and many others in my area. When it locks up it's hard as a rock and sticks to most anything.
zachscc Jan 30th, 04, 3:11 AM Eric I went to the web site and found it but could not find the tech sheet, does anbody have a tech sheet for the epx900 that I can see???
Thanks bob, what grey is the best at contrasting with K-38 so I don't sand through the epoxy?
baddbob71 Jan 30th, 04, 7:34 AM I'd have it tinted to the darkest shade, the epx data sheet it there, I think you just click on the product and the info comes up.
