: A/C Blower....and Compressor...
ktownkid Jul 20th, 05, 2:56 PM Hello John and all-
I have a problem kinda like the "A/C blower quit" thread. My car is a 70 Nova,350 with a 4 speed and A/C.
When I bought the car, the A/C was not working, so I have no idea how long it's been this way. The car is a running, driving car....not a project car and I think everything is complete. I cannot get the compressor to engage, nor can I get the fan motor to run.
I noticed in a parts catalog a "horn relay to A/C harness " A/C power feed wire assembly. Not sure if I have that. What does it look like??? I don't see any wires running from the horn relay to the A/C........unless they run somewhere under the dash. See photos below.
I would like to get the compressor to engage first.......then try the "purple wire thing" you suggested to the other gentleman.
Bad news is.........don't know alot about this stuff!!!!!!
Thank you kindly-

John_Muha Jul 20th, 05, 3:12 PM You may not get the compressor to run without first working on the fan. That is, it all works together from the same power sources.
The A/C wire you are asking about runs into the relay under the hood. A large wire that I believe is orange. This wire powers the fan in the high speed only, so things should work in the lower speeds. If you are following along with the other thread, try some of the same suggestions and see where that gets you.
ktownkid Jul 20th, 05, 4:36 PM Thank you John, I'll try that.......but the catalog says there is a power feed wire from the horn relay.......repeat, horn relay.
I don't think I have any power anywhere. Blower does not work at any speed.

rianbechtold Jul 20th, 05, 5:05 PM Do have ANY wires running to the compressor? I believe there should be two running from the voltage regulator (white and dark blue if i recall?). There should be a large gauge wire (10 i believe) runninjg from the compressor to the horn relay. However, the last time i looked at one, i THINK it spliced in with a red wire running to the voltage regulator (the alternator maybe?). Sorry to be so vague! LOL, it was like a year ago that i looked at it. But i DO KNOW that it did have a power wire running to the horn relay. Hope that helps!?

Understand.
That wire is a power feed wire.
It is a power feed wire for HIGH speed only.
It's not used on the lower speeds.
One end does go to the horn relay.
The other end goes to the high speed relay up by the fan.
Believe it is orange and next to the purple wire.
Did someone cut it off the high speed relay? You don't need it for the lower speeds or the compressor. Have you measured any of the wires on the resistor or speed relay for voltage anywhere at any speed? It's easier to start there instead of under the dash.
ktownkid Jul 20th, 05, 6:22 PM Hello.....
Thanks for the replies.......yes, the wire runs from the horn relay-behind the fenderwell-across the firewall to the A/C fuse. I had thought someone removed it.
Have not tested anything yet.......going to get some wire and a test light at my local auto store. I'm starting to feel better about this........maybe it's "fixable".
I should mention that the previous owner installed a factory tach in the car........a big-big job on a Nova........dash has to come apart. I think he got it put back together correctly, but maybe the fan switch got "killed" in the process. All wires under the dash seem to be in the correct locations...and plugged in. I removed the passenger bucket seat so I could get under the dash, if needed.
Will reply within 24 hours........
Once again........thank you kindly for your help and patience......

ktownkid Jul 22nd, 05, 1:26 PM Hello........sorry, I'm still testing. My radio plug doesn't have any power either. I think both problems are in the fuse block area.
I'll be back.

John_Muha Jul 22nd, 05, 1:41 PM Well, while you are hanging around down there check and see if the brown wire, from the fan switch assembly, isn't cut or missing. Brown is the input 12 volt power wire that ends up running the fan in the lower speeds. It also is used to close the blower relay in higher speeds.
