: What Primer should I use on firewall/undercarriage?
cody Jan 4th, 04, 12:44 AM Hi, I want to find out what primer works best for the firewall/inner fenders, and what epoxy primer works best on the undercarriage? The guy helping me really suggests using PPG's OMNIPRIMER, i think it is 180 or something lke that? I read on a search that the OMNI line is crap? If not using this what PPG type of primer should i use and will it need a sealer?
I am also painting the undercarriage and want to use an expoy primer. I have to use a two part primer for the undercarriage to use the Eastwood Chassis black, so i guess I need a 2K primer? any suggestions, again i would like to use PPG. thanks!
MARTINSR Jan 4th, 04, 10:58 AM The OMNI line is not crap. It is simply a "value line" of PPG and where you pay less, you usually get less. I have heard some people rant and rave about how good OMNI is as well as it's base coats have very poor coverage.
You have to buy what makes sense to you and your cars value. If you have the bucks to buy the top of the line PPG products, then do so. Personally, I feel they are not that much more and I would. If you think about how much most EVERYTHING costs restoring a car, the $200.00 or $300.00 more for the top of the line products is diddly squat.
I recommend DX-1791 etch primer and the black DP epoxy over that. If you have largely bare metal. If there is not much bare metal you could spot prime the etch on it and then epoxy the whole thing. Or just skip the etch and epoxy. The etch will give more corrosion protection. But if you have paint all over without knowing what is under it, it is kinda a moot point.
Now, what is "2K"? If the people who made the Eastwood tech sheet are under the same misunderstanding of most people they mean "urethane" as 2K. However 2K is NOT limited to urethane. ANY product that uses a hardener IS a "2K". It stands for "two componant" Yes I know componant starts with a C. I have no idea what went on there but two componant is what it stands for. So urethane, epoxy, polyester, and there are even non-iso "urethane" type primers like PPG's NCP270 which is a very good primer.
Now, that Chassis black isn't a 2K are you sure you want to use it? I don't know the product at all other than it is not a 2K and not a moisture cured urethane or anything like that. It is just an old enamel or something like that. I "shouldn't" by that discribtion be very durable. Anyway, look into that before you make a final decision.
Well I already bought the chassis black. I guess i should of been more clear, this is what i am doing;
the firewall and inner fenders are going to to be body color, They will both have a decent amount of body filler on them, so i guess the self etching primer won't work(remember old post) The firewall besides the body filler will be mostly metal. I want to use a good primer on the firewall and it doesn't need to be epoxy.
THe undercarriage has been cleaned' but there is still some of the factory paint left with metal showing on the edges. I want to use an epoxy primer on that and then go over it with the chassis black. I don't know that much about the chassis black but they didn't say a 2K. they just said it has to be a "2 stage primer" I don't know that much about the chassis black but wanted to use it because it too is an epoxy paint for durability.
any sugggestions are great, i highly value your opinions! thanks!
ttt again! can anyone respond to my second post...please?
Mike72ss Jan 8th, 04, 7:28 AM Cody,
If the firewall and inner fenders are going to be body color, then you could use PPG k36, k38 or NCP270, then paint your bc/cc system. The under carrige can use the same primers or you could do what Brian said and go with the PPG epoxy primer.
The Eastwood description says " Works great over bare metal or Eastwood Rust Encapsulator." so it seems you don't really need a primer or use their Rust Encapsulator like they suggest.

Texas70 Jan 8th, 04, 2:31 PM I prepped and painted my firewall last week.
Sanded, cleaned and scrubbed. Sprayed with PPG DP50LF Epoxy primer, went over that with Sherwin Williams Ultra-fill II urethane sandable primer (both are 2k systems) and then shot it with a basecoat/clearcoat (3 coats each) of PPG Omni "Cortez Silver" and it turned out awesome. I also did the underside of my deck lid. All this for practice. I told my PPG supplier I was going to paint my car myself to learn how and was not looking for nor expecting a perfect paint job, and would probably be covering this up with something better a few years from now. Hence the Omni. I'm very happy with the results :D
Here it is before paint: (sorry but no after shot posted yet), but could e-mail to you.

Thanks Storm. I used the PPG Omni in Cortez Silver and it turned out really nice (3 coats base, 3 coats clear). Gave me a very deep wet finish. graemlins/thumbsup.gif Pic's will be posted to my site this weekend.
