I would like to make the front of my 72 elcamino look like a 70. I have a 70 chevelle radiator support and grill. I also have elcamino fender extentions. Is it possible to modify the 72 fenders to accept the 70 extentions? Would anyone know how far the face of the radiator support should sit from the front edge of the fender when the extentions ar off? I mounted the 70 rad support and the 72 fenders had two hole on the top front and I used the hole that is towards the rear. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Tom

Don't the Elky and Chevelles have different body lines down the sides of the fenders?Plus the 72 needs the lights cut into the lower front part of the fender like the70's??

Tom, you need to use a 70 core support as the 71-2 willnt fit with the 70 fenders due to the dual headlights.

The diff in the fenders is, the 70 has a front marker light at the lower bottom of the fender. Also the inner support where the ext bolts too is also diff, due to the dual lights again. In order to mate the 70 exts to a 72 fender you need to modify the support heavily or just simiply cut out that support and weld in the new 70 support structure.

So you need a new core support, grille, grille brackets, brackets that hold fender to core support, exts, front valance(under grille), bumper and brackets.

you cant put chevelle fenders on an elky because the chevelle has a body line in it and the elky does not. they will not match up at the front of the door. you need 70 elky fenders. they aare unique to the elky and wagon only.

ALL of the above is 100% on the money. ONLY 70 Elky and wagon fenders/core support will work. You would be better off to locate a 70 Elky/wagon front end and use the required parts (68-72 inner fenders for Elky/wagon/2dr/4dr/conv are all interchangeable). Plus, you are also going to have some wiring harness differences because of the side marker lights and switch from single to dual headlights. Unless you are absolutely determined to do all the little things necessary to make the change, I really think you would be ahead to just keep the 72 look. You would also have to have a 70 front bumper because the 70s have the parking lights in the bumper.
How about considering spending your money on a COMPLETE CI hood system, or at least just the CI hood and working outer flapper door.

I don't think he said he wanted to put Chevelle fenders on an Elky - did he?

He said he already has a 70 core support and wants to convert the 71-72 Elky fenders that he already has to 70 Elky fenders
at least that's how I read it.

Tom, it can be done if you can find a couple of old 70 fenders to cut the bottom side marker portion off of to graft onto your fenders.

I made a 70 fender out of a 71-72 one time by doing that and butchering out some metal behind the fender extension where it couldn't be seen when it was all together.

It's a lot of work to cut off four fenders and weld them back together but I know 70 SW/El Camino fenders are getting hard to find

Might be much easier to repair a pair of old rusted out 70 SW fenders

Dean,

I am glad you understand what I am doing. I just repaired the frame were the steering box mounts and while I had the core support out I reassembled it using a 70. The question I have are as follow.

I know that the front of the fender is different and the area that covers the outer headlight bucket mounts must be cut away. I can fabricate the mounting brackets to hold the 70 extensions in place. The 72 fender has two holes at the front that mounted it to the top of the core support. Are these hole in the same position as on the 70? I would like to have the face of the core support mounted the right distance in from the surface that the extensions mount to so the headlights protrude the right distance in the headlight doors. I do not have the buckets yet but would like to get everything in place. Finally the question. Do I have to cut off and realign the mounting tabs on the front of the fender were it bolts to the top of the core support and could anyone supply the measurement from the front of the fender to the core support directly behind it?

If was easy it wouldn't be fun!

It was several years ago when I did it so about all I remember is what I said above.

I do remember I didn't have to fabricate anything at all.
All I had to do was cut out some metal for the 70 headlight bucket and bolt on the fender extension.

There may have been a bolt or two that I didn't put back because the holes didn't line up, I can't remember but I know the extension was secure and hid the butchered part
No one could ever tell it was a 71-72 fender unless they removed the fender extension.
