I used Krylon #1613 Semi Flat Black after scuffing with steel wool. Looks good, but be prepared to touch up stone ships regularly. You can spray some of the Krylon into a paper cup and use a brush, or get a fat El Marko and dab it on. That actually works better! If you're wondering how the factory got the paint to stick "back in the day", the answer is that they didn't!

I used the Krylon 1613 semi-flat black for the grille in my '71 and it turned out great. Been on it now for over a year and still looks great, with no chips yet and the car is driven often.
