Seems like the new batteries these days don't work to well with the OE style hold down. 2nd gear shifts are murderous:D Looking for something like the strap used on the earlier models that will work with my OE tray.

Or a new tray with strap that will mount in the OE location.

I imagine someone out there makes such an animal!

Thanks!

Hmmm....my Interstate battery stays very secure in the repop OEM style battery tray and hold down. Never a problem.
Believe me...I've "tested" many times! ;) Passes Tech inspection, too.

I have an Optima in my 70 and didn't have any issues with using the stock tray and hold-down. Are you sure the tray is stock, should work fine with a variety of batteries.

I always use the factory tray and never had a problem myself. I just put a new battery in my truck and a Die-hard in the Velle and both gave me grief!

I'm pretty sure the clamp cavity on the battery wasn't as deep as the previous ones. Could just be me, I've been known to chase my arse over stupid $hit before:rolleyes:

I had the same problem with my Diehard battery so I bought a strip of 1/8" steel and bent one up that works mint:

Think I still have a new universal battery clamp hiding in the garage somewhere. I think that may be you are referring to. Beats me where it came from.
Resembles the older clamps that went over the top of the battery. If you want I can try and see if it will go over the 72 Chevelles battery. If so, you can have it.

Thanks John, I have one of those myself and was thinking about using it, but didn't like the idea of fudging with a "J" bolt on the core support side. Not a lot of room there.

Dude! You didn't happen to make two of those did ya:D Looks easy enough to make though, hell I might even be able to do it!

I know I being lazy but was hoping to buy something off the shelf.

It's real easy to make. Only things I used was a poor man's metal brake(Bench Vice and a BFH) and some measuring tape. Took 10 minutes.

I had a real tough time getting my battery hold down to work right..Until I figured out A) Flip it over so it like it looks like it SHOULDNT be on that way, and B) Sticking an extra carb stud into the nut and using an extra carb hold down nut with that instead of constantly trying to get the stupid bolt threaded. There is WAY More room for adjustment with the carb stud. Works great now w/ my battery- and the battery has NO clamp cavity. I'm almost afraid to tighten it too much now
