I seem to be getting quite a bit of smoke everytime I start up the 66 lately. Then if I run it hard there is some as well. Minly it is noticable at start up though. What do you think is the most likely cause? Valve seals? The smoke is white more than blue. This is a 350 motor.

Thanks for any help

How long does the white smoke last? Could it just be moisture burning off in the exhaust? How long does the car sit in between runs? You could also have a small hairline crack somewhere either in your block or heads which would cause the white smoke. When the engine heats up the expansion of the metal would basically seal off the crack. Are you getting any milky white froth substance in your oil dipstick or on the underside of your oil fill cap or breather? Chances are if it is white smoke, it has to do with water or coolant. Usually if the smoke is blue means that you are burning oil like a bad valve seal would be when you first start up a car but then goes away after the car warms up. Keep us posted.

Warm up your car, then let it idle for 15 or 20 minutes, just let it idle, then rev it up a couple of times, if it blows blue smoke its a good sign the piston rings might be bad, but thats not 100% sure its the rings.

I was thinking possibly valve guides leaking, or an intake manifold with a slight seep. I would try and see if you can tell if it is oil or antifreeze first then go from there. just a thought

Sure sounds like valve seals to me. Does it smoke a little after coasting down a hill and then accelerating? If it were rings, you should get blowby out the valve cover PCV and or vent hole. A compression test would tell for sure.

I have mainly noticed it on start up. But it looks to me like a little on hard acceleration also. I have not noticed the down the hill thing. I have not seen any blow by in the engine compartment. I also have no water in the oil or around the filler cap when I looked at it. I need to do a compression test for sure. I just cannot get the tester into every plug hole? He@# I have to take the headers off just to be able to change some of the spark plugs.
