Who would be responsible for temporary plates? Wouldn't it be the buyer? Otherwise I would think that it would be under my insurance. Anyone have to do this? (don't worry guys, its not the Chevelle I'm selling)

Once he buys it, it's his problem.

Greg,
Dont know your entire deal, but I would not release the car to him until the funds are in your bank account and cleared.

In Florida, if you buy a used car from a private seller, you can put an " IN TRANSIT " sign in the back window. See if it is legal there.

Thanks guys. Actually, I have an old temp tag I got from a dealer. Has my insurance info on it. If I were to get a temp tag, my insurance info would have to be on it. If this guys wants the car, it is his problem.

Guess it depends on how bad you want to sell the car,and how bad he wants to buy the car.

Oh yeah, if someone is picking it up, they're going to show up with cash... I'll accept nothing else... Thanks.

He is driving from Jersey to California..... Yes I know... I doubt he is going to do it so I'm probably wasting time thinking about it...

the way i see it is like this- once you sign away the title and he puts his name on the title, it is his responsibility. i think i'd be making a copy of the title after you watch him fill his info on it- and after you make sure it matches his drivers license and insurance info, of course. maybe also make up a bill of sale stating that the car is no longer your problem. also, call your local DMV and tell them you sold it and to whom. in MN, you are supposed to take a part of the title into the DMV with the new owners info on it- and if they don't transfer the title within like 10 days from the date on the card you bring in, they pay a penalty. but if they never actually transfer the title, at least the state knows you don't own it anymore.
if you do all that, if he robs a bank or something and uses that car as the getaway car, when the cops come knocking down your door for some reason, you can show them everything and they can then proceed to go knock down his door.

I'm in VA and a friend of mine just went to DMV and got a sticker that goes on front windshield, it was good to drive it back home, the vette was in FL. Call DMV and find out if it needs to come from the DMV in his state or yours, I don't remember which, but I think he got the sticker in VA. Funny thing is he drove that vette back to VA (900) miles and never got stooped, with no tags, just the sticker on the front windshield.

Ask your ins. agent what to do on an out of state sale. They wouldn't even drop a car I sold for 100$ off my policy until I turned the plates into DMV and sent them the receipt.

In AZ you can go online and print out a TEMP tag for about $3. Good for the trip back.

As far as im concerned. Since he chose to buy a car out of state, its his responsibility to get it back home properly.
